Durham mags.......

Obviously anyone can support any team.
I live in Northumberland and support Sunderland. Started going regularly in 92. Nobody can accuse me of jumping on any bandwagon.
There are loads of blokes my age who support Liverpool, because they were good growing up, starting to see loads of man City shirts appearing round here these days.
I'm guessing some Durham mags will be the same, because they were a good side growing up they latched on to them, if they had no family tie to Sunderland, we were a f***ing shambles then so not as appealing to an impressionable neatral.
The whole pretend Geordie thing is cringe worthy mind. Like that micheal martin, isn't he from county Durham so tries extra hard with the Geordie stuff, probably has local hero as a ringtone.

I live in the south of France for years and the locals moaned about all sorts from the crime to the litter.

But some of the exiled Brits would defend the place to a ridiculous degree, especially if they had visitors down.

The locals thought they were weird.

I'm a Shotley Bridge born Geordie who supports Sunderland.

I'll happily tell my Mackem mates that I find their accent harsh to my ears and would never make any attempt to copy it.

I won't use words, in real life, I don't like such as ket, marra, etc.

The Durham Mags who act 'arl Toon' make me cringe ..... it's absolutely pathetic.
A Shotley Bridge ( Co Durham) born geordie?

That's how we referred to ourselves in those days.

It wasn't until John Hall, and his pathetic Geordie Nation shite, that things started to change.
If you're not geordies now, what are you? You're a canny way from the Wear and Sunderland? Is there an official name for someone from Co Durham?

Difference being the Liverpool lot don't strut about telling everyone to calm down. Durham mags and a hell of a lot from Northumberland where I grow up are a joke. Toon this and geordie boys that. What are you doing??

If anyone, on my travels, picks up on my accent I'll say, 'I'm Durham' as a noun.

I don't know how that comes across and don't particularly care. I just choose to distance myself from the cartoon character Geordie that's been created in the last decade or so.

People have become walking talking Viz characters and it's a bit cringy tbh.

There's something insecure about people who continually talk about where they're from and how they speak.

When they ladle on the accent, like a 'lorn yasel Geordie' phrasebook it's sickening

They do have some kind of mental issue, to want to belong with that group

This topic causes a lot of upset normally. I'm a Geordie. I hate the term 'Mackem' - it was a term of attempted slur by people with a Tyneside accent. I remember when we sang "Geordie Boys" "We're Geordies, we're mental, we're off wa fkin heads" etc etc etc. The term 'Mackem' has grown to be used now by a younger generation who believe it is a term to identify with Sunderland.

My Granda would say we were all Geordies (newcastle, Sunderland, Durham & some of Northumberland), the way to differentiate would be Tynesider or Wearsider or Durham lad etc. BTW he was a pitman from Silksworth.

Not a popular post I imagine, but stop letting Mags steal our identity man.

I've supported SAFC since 1969, was born in Newcastle to parents from Sunderland and Durham and brought up in Northumberland. I'm a Geordie and tell anyone I meet abroad that 'Mackems' don't exist - it's a Mag term ! Tin hat on

No need for the tin hat mate, we're all different ... it's only the football clubs that binds us.

Hardly an obsession. You support your local team. For County Durham that is SAFC. I'll give a little leeway to the Gateshead folk who are historically County Durham but north of the river is probably their local team. As far as my accent goes, I can't open my gob without some funny c*nt parroting me like it's never been done before.
This, North West Durham is a lot closer to Newcastle than Sunderland. Drank in Consett in the 80s and it was mainly mag then. Not worth getting out knickets in a knot about it.

I'm Durham City born and bread and a 4th Generation Sunderland supporter.

I remember my grandad telling me when he was in the army in the 50s anyone from the north east would be referred to as a Geordie.

I'm exilled now in London and have been for years, I often get referred to as a Geordie and really don't have a problem with it, to most it has no football connotations. I certainly prefer it to being called a 'northener'. The only people who ever call me a Mackem are Newcastle supporters and it's normally seen by them as an insult.

Disagree with that mind Reiver. I'm from shields but honestly think I've got more in common with Sunderland lads than "Geordies" from the "toon". When I'm out and about down south for work I've actually started saying I'm from near Sunderland if they don't know where Shields is.

Exactly !! Don't let them steal your identity ! The press have started to use it now (Mackem) and it really sounds insulting even if it isn't now meant to be.

Only a group of people, as thick as the Mags, could base an 'insult' on an accent

I agree with you mate.

I was talking more about Sunderland supporters in general, wherever they're from.
