New Music Releases Thread

I am actually really enjoying the new Hippo Campus album. Typically a hit or miss for me, but this album is very enjoyable. They are one of my son's favorite bands.

The Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs album is excellent if Sabbathian psych rock with a touch of McClusky/Future of the Left is your bag. Beyond that, from this week, Marissa Nadler is spectral and haunting, Amber Arcades is high quality female fronted indie pop/rock and, well, actually, the Mudhoney album is a lot of fun.

Another week, another batch of releases. A fair bit of interested for me this week. In semi-alphabetical order, there's new stuff from: Adrienne Lenker, Ancinet Shapes, Atmosphere, Behemoth, Cat Power, Coheed and Cambria, Cursive, Doyle Bramhall II, Echo & the Bunnymen, Electric Six, Eric Church, Fucked UpGhonstface Killah, Haerts, High on Fire, Hugh Cornwell, Ice Nine Kills, Jerusalem In My Heart, Kristin Hersh, KT Tunstall, Madeline Kenny, Matt Nathanson, mewithoutyou, Molly Burch, Petite Noir (mini-album), Phosphorescent, Steve Perry, Swearin', Sylar, T.I., Tall Heights, Tokyo Police Club, Twenty One Pilots, Will Hoge, Windhand, You Me At Six, Kakagaku Moyu, Exploded View, Nathan Bowles, Matt Berry (various TV theme tunes), Advance Base and The Other Years.

Cat Power, Echo & the Bunnymen, Fucked Up, Ghostface Killah and Phosphorescent for me. Pretty good week

I’m still catching up on last week having become obsessed with The Living End’s new one. I’ll check out Atmosphere this week but everything else is time-dependent.

Rough Trade's weekly new release mail suggests I missed a few things. New albums by Ron Gallo and Sarah Nixey (both of which interest me) plus a new John Smith album (which doesn't). Miles Hunt has a double album of acoustic versions of songs from over his career out and there's Ninja Tuney electronica from Marie Davidson, who's Canadian.

not so impressed with eatb mate not sure what the point is. a few interesting treatments but none necessarily better than the originals imo. the two new numbers would sit comfortably above the filler from the last couple of lps though

I’m enjoying the new Jill Sobule album. Very poppy but incredibly well written. Produced by the wonderful Ben Lee and it does have an element of his sound there.

I’d never heard of her before (Ben Lee posted about it on his social media last week) but think I might need to give her back catalogue a try. Her 1990 debut was produced by Todd Rundgren, and her Wiki Page compares her songwriting to Warren Zevon and Randy Newman. Apparently a couple of songs appear in Clueless with Alicia Silverstone.

Quite a lot to digest this week for me:

Matt Berry - novelty fun with TV themes.
Fucked Up - they've moved a hell of a long way from their hardcore roots and have become one of Canada's best bands.
Harmony Rockes and Peter Walker - a Mercury Rev spinoff. Thre long instumental tracks. Decent but not essential.
Adrianne Lenker - quieter and more fragile than her work with Big Thief. Sounds pretty lovely.
Kikagaku Moyu - Japanese psychrockers going in a mellower, more post-rock direction. Intriguing!
Kristin Hersh - probably closer to Throwing Muses than a lot of her solo stuff. Well worth a listen.
Cat Power - she's moved away from her lush, souful sound back to her earlier guitar based stuff to some degree. Good.
The Other Years - old school folk/bluegrass female harmonies.
Molly Burch - almost moving in the opposite direction to Cat Power. Very, er accessible?
Nathan Bowles - psych-folk guitarist goes a bit post-rock at times. Again, good.
Phosphorescent - seem to have moved away from their country roots toward something a bit Flaming Lipsy. Excellent!

Yeah Phosphorescent record is his best yet imo. Really like it.

Couple of things I’ve been enjoying on a more electronic tip,

Frost,
French / Swedish duo made up of fujiya and Miyagi and stereolab members. You’ll like it if that’s your thing. Very motorik, very good.

Dominique Dumont.
Quite Balearic, reggae, electronic. Very similar to Peaking Lights which is definitely a good thing. Getting bigged up by Piccadilly records.

Will try and listen to them.

Not sure I'm exactly accurate with the Flaming Lips comparison with Phosphorescent but he's moved up a gear/level. It's an increidbly warm album.

Looks like another bumper Friday for new releases. This week we have things from Atreyu, Basement, Belly (Belly the hiphop artist, not Belly the indie band), BRONCHO, Calvin Johnson, Colter Wall, Connan Mockasin, Elvis Costello & the Impostors, Eric Clapton, Graham Parker, Jaakko Eino Kolevi, John Grant, John Hiatt, Justin Courtney Pierre, Kurt Vile, Martin Barre, Matthew Dear, Nazareth, Parcels, Polyphia, Primal Scream (the original Memphis sessions of Give Out But Don't Give Up), Quavo, The Bottle Rockets, The Dodos, The Watson Twins, Tom Morello, Valley Maker, William Basinski and Lawrence English, Young Jesus, Jim Ghedi & Toby Hay, Anna st. Louis, Goatman (Goat's leader solo) and Emika.

There's a fair few of interest there.

Gold Panda and Jas from Simian Mobile Disco released a record together yesterday under the moniker Selling. If you search for Gold Panda on Spotify it shows up there.

One listen and first impressions are very good.
