I'm sure I read somewhere (a real scientific article - not Viz) that Star Trek may have inadvertently identified how we will eventually be able cross interstellar distances by bending space like a loop in a length of string then jumping across the narrow bit.
Star Trek tries to base it's technology in scientific theory. Or at least it did during TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

Would there be a mass panic? There's the unknown isn't there?
Could go the other way, if we knew we weren't alone we may find nations start working together in unity.

A bit pointless bitching about who has Jerusalem when the Klingons want to photon torpedo the moon on a drunken lark.

Absolutly mate. So many unknowns. I for one dont know how I'd react. Are they here for good? bad? Surely if they haven't already wiped us out then they must be good. What if they want to enslave us and anal rape us all the time? You just dont know mate. Best gan to the highlands and live in a log cabin IF it ever happens and see how it all plays out.

As i once said, i believe their has been a date, decided by governments in the past, and other organisations with the Species of other worlds who have visited this planet, in the past, that some day soon, the official announcement will be made.

To me what has happened lately, makes me think we are getting closer by the day to that event, Trappist one last year for example
So shall I stop telling people about the aliens? I don't want to cause a fuss.

If and its a big IF we get disclosure of a alien species (highly unlikely in my eyes ((a real one that is, it could be faked))). We dont necessarily know how people/governments/ institutions will react. We might even have the bible bashers destroyed. We just dont know. What do you think might happen, rather than try and belittle someone elses opinion.

I wasn't belittling his opinion, if governments have their date set for proving there is life on other planets they are doing anything but prepare the population for it.

I think in a million years or more an alien species will hear something we've sent out, we will be long gone by then.

I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in ghosts, karma, fortune telling or any of that kind of shit but can happily say that I’m 100% positive life will exist elsewhere in the universe. There’s just no doubt about it in my mind. The universe is just too infinitely big for life to not exist elsewhere.

Yes, but we don't know how many variables are needed for life to start. We don't even know how life started so everyone is in the dark really.

Why must they be good? If you or I watch a spider spinning a web and do nothing we aren't a force for good or bad to that spider, we are just something that observed the spider and had no impact.

Spiders, I hope aliens don't look like spiders. There would be mass panic then.

I see where you are coming from but it doesnt quite work as an analogy for me. The aliens wouldnt be just watching and us ganning on like nothing is going on. Turn it around for example, If we went to the spiders homeworld #Shudder the thought# and rocked up. What would the spiders think of us? Would they just happily carry on?

Plus not everyone in our race would happily allow a spider to spin its web. Some of us would wipe them out.

Especially when they tell us Arachna, the one true creator that span the web that is the universe, created them in his image and all else must perish.

 Fucks sake

What makes you think they would let them?

I'm sure it doesn't.

My point was that this is a hypothetical species capable of intergalactic travel. There's no reason to believe they are good or bad, indifferent is a perfectly viable option.

They may not be capable of even recognising we are there.

For all we know the sun is sentient and alive in a way beyond our comprehension. Watching us while we go on about our business in a similar way to the hypothetical spider that I'm not bothering one way or the other.

True enough, if we were putting together a group of people to observe spiders in their natural habitat we'd probably try to whittle them out as part of the recruitment process.
