Now Adil Rashid has packed in red ball cricket, this just shows England's misuse of spinners.

I know some don't rate him but he takes wickets. Especially on a fourth or fifth day pitch with damage on the wicket.

He might succeed or he might fail but I bet you any money you like he wont be batting with a strike rate of 55 this time around. His past record isn't dreadful but its neither here nor there - people know he has underachieved and there's a lack of confidence in suitable alternatives who aren't really pulling up any trees in county cricket which is why he is back in. Smith wants him to smash it about - i'm excited to see how it goes, he certainly wont be piss farting around.

Curran is unlucky too - may have escaped people's notice but he just took a ten wickets against a decent Yorkshire batting side and forced a result. I haven't been convinced by him at all, but he's done a damn sight more than Woakes to get in the squad in that number eight, fourth seamer role. Maybe we will back Wood and go for all-out pace, that's a debate - but the decision should be based on pitch and be Wood versus Curran, not Woakes. He's done nothing.

They've said Root to three, which I have reservations about. Bairstow will be pissed off too - wanted to keep the gloves. Butller, it's a punt. Bess has been bowling dross - they should have gone with Virdi - what's to lose?

Stoneman is a very lucky boy. I think he should have been axed and someone like Gubbins brought in, if only to encourage country batsman. Well, also because he's a better bet - Stoneman has made little impression on some belting Oval pitches. Ok, you want Division One runs - well go with Jennings then.

I think Joe Clarke is very unlucky, but I guess he's next cab of the rank in the middle order. Buttler should be made aware that there are some very good young keeper batsman - Foakes, Pope, too.

That's not what I said at all, so quite why you've totally ignored what I did say - and used some random reference to Lancashire is absolutely anyone's guess.

And you wouldn't play Livingstone at 7 would you., and you wouldn't for Joe Clarke, James Vince, or whoever. Just like you wouldn't play Jos Buttler at 3 or 4

Why? We've played with two wicket keepers in the side numerous times - why is the caveat attached to Foakes regarding the gauntlets but not Buttler?

TMS blunder, tweeted Malan at 3, then have had to correct the statement.

Good, as it genuinely has been an issue, Root despite being happier at 4. I don't think was helping the team in the best way, I think we have a lot of middle order players waiting in the wings.

But top 3 is a big issue and Root is our best player regardless of a 3,4 or 5, you strengthen where we are weakest.

the last point is a decent point, but I don't think it will impact him

it might not work but I don't see it as a huge gamble like, I mean he is batting 7, I reckon he will be fine

If not, then Bairstow moves back down and we pick a middle order player, I think its bold and worth a try

Dont agree, Rashid has played lots, his decision to quit, can't blame England for thar

very questionable character that lad, don't think he is remotely tough enough for test cricket IMO

i think bowling in t20 is tougher than tests.

getting smashed all around the ground, compared to bowling on day five of a test, with a wearing pitch and four around the bat

we took crane to Australia, with zero experience and he was thrashed all over the park.

a similar thing happened to scotty borthwick, who will never get another game.

Imo Rashid is a proven wicket taker at odi/t20 international level, but we will never know as he was never given an opportunity to play a test in england
 
I can't believe we're picking someone to bat at 7, to come in after the all-rounder and the 'keeper. Not an all-rounder or even an outstanding fielder, just a batsman. I bet Buttler cannot believe his luck.

You were suggesting, I think, that you didn't like Stokes at 7 and liked Bairstow at 7, coming in after him. I guess my point was that the batting line up should be more about getting Bairstow in his right place than Stokes, given he's a better batter (and that he should be above him, generally). But I'll admit, it's possible I got the wrong end of the stick in terms of what you were saying.

I think people are saying that we should have brought a new middle order player in and shuffled it around a bit - perhaps by putting Stokes down at seven - and that this would be a better outcome overall.

I'm not sure what I feel about Buttler tbh, so I'm going to sit on the fence. Stoneman is my main problem.

Not sure how much of a difference it makes, red ball or white ball. If you're scoring 100s for fun against world class cricketers, he's probably worth a punt at #7. Even more impressive to do it in a t20, IMO. Not many balls to get a 100.

Buttler selection is fine.
