I'm inclined to agree. Burns is a regular 1000 runs a season man. He hasn't quite had the weight of runs Rocky has in county cricket but that doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't adapt to test cricket better. If Stoneman doesnt make a big score in the first test (and he isnt in form) I think Burns will get the call. In Jennings case I think its too early after getting dropped to return - he needs to do more for a longer period.

This is the problem with selection, everyone has a different opinion, there is no right answer its all subjective
But people usually say "typical ECB" "Typical England" etc
In reality, there is no agenda, just people selecting a team they think can win
I personally think Buttler is a dreadful decision

He treats the County Championship with utter contempt because all he's bothered about is making money playing T20 (which I don't blame him for by the way).
What message does it send out to the likes of Foakes and Clarke though? What do them lads have to do to get a game?

If he had a brilliant FC record I could get it. But he doesn’t. He has technical flaws all over the shop so he plays a game where they are less noticeable.

He actually said he doesn't understand red ball cricket, whereas in white ball cricket he knows exactly what he needs to do as he's walking to the wicket. No I don't agree with it … I'd rather Burns at 3 or something.

Its a fantastic experience for him and is improving him as a cricketer.
You'd rather have Foakes in? That is your call, I think Buttler is a lot more talented and has a lot more potential
We pick all our players on county form, why can't we have a slight wild card, especially when he is that talented?

can't underestimate how hard he has worked to be a world class gloveman, and he really is now, to take it off him would be cruel and detrimental to him at the minute

Agree. Is a message to the likes of Clarke, Gubbins, Jennings, Curran, Vince, Pope etc. - don't worry about the country game, we don't value it.
Curran is unlucky too - may have escaped people's notice but he just took a ten wickets against a decent Yorkshire batting side and forced a result. I haven't been convinced by him at all, but he's done a damn sight more than Woakes to get in the squad in that number eight, fourth seamer role. Maybe we will back Wood and go for all-out pace, that's a debate - but the decision should be based on pitch and be Wood versus Curran, not Woakes. He's done nothing.
They've said Root to three, which I have reservations about. Bairstow will be pissed off too - wanted to keep the gloves. Butller, it's a punt. Bess has been bowling dross - they should have gone with Virdi - what's to lose?
Stoneman is a very lucky boy. I think he should have been axed and someone like Gubbins brought in, if only to encourage country batsman. Well, also because he's a better bet - Stoneman has made little impression on some belting Oval pitches. Ok, you want Division One runs - well go with Jennings then.
I think Joe Clarke is very unlucky, but I guess he's next cab of the rank in the middle order. Buttler should be made aware that there are some very good young keeper batsman - Foakes, Pope, too.

Stoneman is because he hasn't made a single century yet and for an opener that's not acceptable. He's also been served up some belters at the Oval and watched the likes of Clarke and Pope make hay with them, whilst he has done nothing of note.
For an opener? Its prbably the hardest position to score a 100 from
He played well in NZ and deserved to keep his place.
The obsession over 100s is ridiculous now, was never like this when growing up, obiously over his England career he needed one, but just on his last series he got 50s and saw off the new ball, batted time, that is what the opener is there for.
Its like when Vince got 87 or someit, its like "oh but he didn't get the 100 he really needed" like 13 runs would have made any difference to the context of a match

Well it’s about game changing scores really, 100 is an arbitrary number I agree. Vince made 80 odd in Brisbane. Had that’s been 150 then that changes the game.

Fantastic experience, improving him as a Cricketer - definitely, I agree, but only as a WHITE ball Cricketer.
As Bri and Chunky pointed out, he's absolutely mediocre against a red ball and clearly his previous record tells you that he's got no time for it and very little interest in it at all.
We can have a wild card, Bess is that wild card in this squad - young lad, given a go. Buttler is talented, but is he talented against the red ball? No.
I think it was Chunky that said it's like picking someone for an 11 a side football game because they're good at 5 a side - T20 and Test Match Cricket are absolutely poles apart, both are completely different games.
