Yes he has missed a lot of cricket (his own fault but let’s not do that again), but players may miss one series all the time due to injury. He’s since played the one day stuff as well as some warm up stuff (I know he missed the first due to injury)

Wow, 4 hours. He’s playing as a specialist batsman and as such should be treated as such 4 hours is hardly exceptional and it’s not like he is playing in 40 degree heat in the sub continent.

By all accounts he played superbly (unlike the other shite), but he doesn’t get a free pass

No free pass from me ,just a bit of understanding that he came into the game undertone and rather than a careless shot it was a tired one.
As you said he did play superbly ,a very patient and determined innings .
 
Moenn Ali averages this winter:

Batting - 18.82
Bowling - 126.8

I know he's not the only one, but the point is changes need to be made, they can't keep playing the same (losing) team over and over.

Pick your 5 best batsman, Stokes at 6, your best keeper (if that’s Bairstow fair enough), and your 4 best bowlers

If they can bat, great. But it’s secondary

The top order are weak mentally and I think they believe that the middle order will continue to bail them out time after time. Sorry lads, you get runs and the bowlers get the wickets

I mean if Ali doesn't get dropped, then serious questions need to be asked

Also Woakes can't play abroad, sorry he just can't, his record his beyond bad

I wish we'd replace Bayliss as coach of the Test side. We've different captains for the ODIs & Tests, no reason we can't have different coaches imo.

There's a temptation to pick the best batsman as a captain, understandable I suppose but they are two different jobs and two different skillsets. Having said that I'm not sure how you judge if an England player will be a good captain since they never do any before being given the job.

There is only one way to find out I guess.
It looks like going as I feared it might for Root as captain, his batting hasn't hit the heights it had previously and it looks clear to me that's it's putting a strain on him. That said, there are no obvious alternatives.
Hopefully it's just a long tour and he can get back and have a good summer.

Its hard to tell because there is not much he can do with this attack

Only Jimmy showing any form, we will never take 20 wickets

I cant stress how much easier it is for a captain if he can 20 wickets, which is why it makes the actions of Smith and Warner so much worse, they have such a good attack, everything else is easier

Our batsman, while not the best, are always under scoreboard pressure
