Council to provide meals all year round for children from low-income families

Back in the early 80s when I found myself on the dole with a young family the first thing we did when I got the giro was to buy enough food to make sure the bairns had enough to eat. Ok it was simpler times back then we had a black and white telly no mobile phones and used the phone box at the end of the street. The furniture we got when it needed replacing we got from second hand shops. Other family members who were still in work would give us stuff when they replaced theirs such as a fridge or carpets. At the end of the day the bairns never went hungry.

If the taxpayers are already paying for benefits why should Council Tax payers then have to pay more just because the lazy parents are too irresponsible to look after their kids properly?
So what about people on low incomes who also pay taxes. ? Plus your last statement was perthetic As most people claiming benefits work part-time.

Btw how must do you pay into the state?

Isn’t that the point of the whole thread?
It should be, however we seem to have some people who are time travellers from the pre-Victorian age who don't live in today's world where a lot of hard working people do part-time jobs or low paid manual work...

Ok - I follow you. But won’t pretty much all low income parents be receiving additional benefits.

For what it’s worth I would remove child allowance and use it to fund this sort of thing.

Regarding benefits it's complicated as rent/council taxes etc Can be taken off them if they go over. I employ 6 members of staff and 3 work part time for me and do a brilliant job, they pay tax NI etc and one thing they are not is lazy I'd love to employ them full time but I simply can't do it at the moment. To tar everyone with the same brush is stupid as it's not as easy as black n white...

I am not certain anyone is doing that - the vast majority of low income families will be ensuring their kids are well fed and clothed. Is their actually anyone in the UK who is financially unable to look after their kids if they got their priorities correct - I suspect not.

So are you saying we should stop supporting free school meals ?

No - and you can tell that by the fact I didn’t use any of those words.
Go back through and read some of the posts mate, some people must be on a wind-up or really need to give their heads a shake as some of the comments are pathetic to say the least. There's a reason why some councils feel the need to do this, and I support it 100%.

Ok but I am not certain why other people’s posts mean that I am against free school meals.
I have already posted that I also support this and would fund it by stopping all child allowance - which could also be used to provide free school meals to all kids.
