Council to provide meals all year round for children from low-income families

I remember school dinners as being badly cooked shit. It was a welcome relief to find I could pop down to Woolies and get a nutritious burger and onions from the hot food counter.
In the 60's the bait at school was disgusting, badly prepared shit . At least half of what the old crones produced got chucked out .

The chips were alright. The curry was ok as well in a watery full off currants way.I have never seen a Manchester Tart since I left Chester Road juniors in 1979.

Is this really where we’re at as a society? We have families who are so poor the council has to feed children every day of the year?

Shocking we’ve allowed ourselves to get into this state.

A Scottish council is planning to provide school meals 365 days a year to children from low income families.

North Lanarkshire Council said its proposal would help tackle "holiday hunger".

The "Food 365" programme would cover the 175 days of the year when lunches are not served in school.

If approved, the council will run a pilot project in the spring break and could then extend the scheme over the summer holidays.

Council may feed children 365 days a year

Any parents who are on benefits and don't feed their children properly should be hauled in front of the courts after being charged with child neglect and benefit fraud.

The 80's were pretty grim too. Hopefully a few episodes of Gordon or Jaimie have worked their wonders on the "chefs".....

It's still grim. Mainly cheap low quality processed food. A lot of the meals come in pre-prepared and the kitchen staff just warm it up. The bairn won't have school dinners and takes a packed lunch.

I thought all that was long gone and everything was prepared on site now. In Co Durham that is, not sure if it's the same in the rest of the country.

If the kids didn’t spend their pocket money on contract phones, lease cars and Starbucks every morning, they’d be able to afford some scran.

It's Taylor Shaw at our school.

The dinner children get a list for the following term and they have to pick all their meals for that term, so they can be ordered in.

I couldn't suddenly ask for mine to go on dinners next week as they won't be able to supply the meals for her and I'd have to wait until after the Easter holidays.

This

Our kids took bait ,costs next to nowt to bring a kid up properly .

Better off soending the money showing parents how to cook from scratch. Give a man a fish and he will complain Merills was brill back in the day.or something.

In my first and second years at Walbottle all of the school lunches were cooked on site and I used to thoroughly enjoy them, then we moved house and everything was shipped in and reheated in steam ovens (not good).

On one noteable occasion the steam had got into the sponge pudding, which turned it inedible but portions were used as footballs in the yard - they were indestructible!

I probably spend about a fiver a week on packed lunches for her compared to £15 for school dinners. I know she's getting decent food in her packed lunch and it's healthier than the dinners too.
Good habits to teach .

Young aprentice at work was in the habit of buying bait everyday at the shops, after a while told him off and explained the reasons why it’s a no -no.Mother and Fatha should have drummed it into him as a child .

Christ, didn't realise you had to choose that far in advance. It'll be off by the time they get it.;)

I agree. For a LA to identify this need and provide for it is great but it must be a significant need for them to do so.

I find it a worrying sign that families can’t afford to feed their children when we really do live in an age of plenty - it’s just not plenty distributed
We don't live in an age of plenty, we live in an age of debt. If there was plenty to go round this country wouldn't be TRILLIONS in debt. You are on football forum following an 'industry' where the majority of 'customers' earn around £400 a week yet the players can earn 500x that ammount, and you are surprised it's not a fair society!!???

People need to take responsibility for theirs and their children’s lives irrespective of upbringing, wealth or environment.

What is the answer? A portion of your benefit money, along with rent and bills are apportioned to supermarket vouchers?
