SMB Tennis thread (note there is a specific Wimbledon 22 thread)

I have to say, that performance was remarkable. It's the first time I've seen Norrie play.

I know @The Bridge Lad is a big admirer of his. The power he has from both wings especially on clay was impressive. He had the composure to serve it out with ease. He has a big future!

Aye, first pro match on clay and first of any sort on that surface for about 5 years. Unreal comeback, I suppose if someone did back RBA at 1/20 most bookies would have paid out with him going 2 up. He had a cracking run from after Wimbledon up until October, including beating Sandgren 3 times in as many weeks and winning 3 Challengers, just dipped going into the Aussie unfortunately. He'll get wildcards for Queen's, Eastbourne and Wimbledon again and won't be defending much so hopefully he'll firmly establish himself in the top 100 in the coming months.

Certainly makes the next 2 days more interesting. Like you, I'm not a fan of doubles, although I don't mind Jamie as much as you , but that's pretty much a 50/50 match and if GB win, will they risk Kyle in the final 2 rubbers on Sunday? Big decisions to be made. I'll be at least having it on in the background when coverage starts on BBC2 in 30 mins.

I see that 15 year old Kostyuk backed up her AO run by winning a $60k ITF event in Australia this morning which had a reasonable field - up to 184 in the rankings now.

First time he’d played in anger on clay, against a top 20 fella who was born and raised on it. Pretty incredible result really, fingers crossed Murray and Inglot win this afters. The fella Broady played is certainly beatable.

There's every chance we wouldn't have won this tie even if Edmund and Andy Murray were both fit, never mind. As long as they're both fit by September we should still be in the World Group next year judging by who we're likely to play.

True. Spain away was always going to be a tough ask and none of the teams we're likely to meet in a playoff are anything to be afraid of.

I suppose, bearing in mind Broady and Norrie were 9/1 and 10/1 to win their respective rubbers, this is probably the best position many would have hoped us to be in 2 days ago, and as it is, I'm pleased it was Norrie who got the win rather than the doubles as although it will likely prove to be academic, longer term it could really be the making of him and now loads more people in Britain know about him.

I see Mladenovic ended her 15 match losing streak to win 3 in a row to make the St Petersburg final and faces Kvitova tomorrow afternoon.

Cracking set of tennis here mate. 5-5 and 3 breaks each in the first set.

It's really good. Ramos just has a bit more experience but you can see Norrie has the raw materials to be top 20 at least.

Big shame there, 3-2 up in the TB and Ramos had been vulnerable on serve for a while. Great comeback though from 4-0 and 5-2 down. Yeah, bright future.

Where does he normally play that week?

If anywhere on grass it's usually Halle which is the same 500 status. He went straight from French to Wimbledon last year and French to Olympics the year before. He actually played at Queens in 2015, so this is the 2nd time in 8 years. I did think he had played it more recently, but read the title wrong. The GB Tennis twitter handle were bigging up a 'massive Queens announcement at 10pm' about 5 hours in advance, so it's a bit a let down as it's just been 3 years.

I was hoping it was going to be boosted to a Masters 1000 in the coming seasons as it would be great if either that or Halle got that status and they downgraded Monte Carlo or another clay event down to a 500.

He's been scheduled to play Queens the last two years, ended up pulling out both times before the draw. If he wins the French Open he'll probably end up doing the same again.

Aye, more than likely. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if he eventually just pulls out of Wimbledon (not this year), but instead of citing injury / niggles, just admit he is prioritising his schedule for longevity - a bit like Federer and the French, realise there's little chance of winning it and just do hard - clay - hard.

Fed Cup starts tomorrow - GB in a group with Portugal and Estonia and have been massively boosted by Kaia Kanepi pulling out with a virus. Estonia still have Kontaveit (and home advantage) but it is a lot more favourable now.

Apparently Kanepi asked for €100,000 to play Fed Cup and Estonia basically told her to do one so she said that she's ill and couldn't play. Good news for us though as you say.

Dunno why they do Fed Cup like this, kind of kills it a little bit the way these early rounds are set up. Looks like we're breezing past Portugal though at least.

1-0 up in the play off to get into another play off in September to qualify for the World Group II for next year. Konta's match is just about to start, she wins and we're through.

There's a stream on the Fed Cup facebook for anyone else who's given up on that shite down at Bristol.

Yeah, I give up on my stream and put it on Heather when I saw she had lost the first set. Konta had a great win over Kontaveit yesterday so hopefully should be able to finish the job so the doubles becomes irrelevant. The playoff is actually April - hopefully finally get a home tie this time after 3 successive away ties at the same stage.

Still following the results on Soccer Saturday.
