You don't like the Matrix? Reloaded and Revolu ...the third one I could understand.

What does essential films even mean anyway?
I didn't mind the first one actually. Then it got a bit silly. I'm reading essential as films which not only capture the era, were groundbreaking, and which you'd recommend.

I'm guessing none? Did LA Confidential not get anything. Best supporting actor iirc?

Yeah, between them they won various things (but not as much as they should). But not best picture. Here's the list of 1990s winners

Dances With Wolves
The Silence of the Lambs
Unforgiven
Schindler's Lifts
Forrest Gump (ffs)
Braveheart (ffs)
The English Patient (meh)
Titanic
Shakespeare In Love (fuck off)
American Beauty (meh)

I absolutely hate Titanic, Dances and Forrest G. American Beauty I rewatched before the Kevin Spacey thing and was surprised at how underwhelmed I was. I really enjoyed it in the 90s too.

I watched Fargo again recently. It was nowhere near as good as I remembered it.

Sorry - but I can't allow any criticism of Shakespeare in Love - I'm related to one of the producers.

Tyneside cinema has an essential films of the 90s season and their choices are:
Fargo
Boogie Nights
Starship Trooper
Fight Club
Blue Travail
Chungking Express

This has set me thinking, and if pushed my choices would be:
Fight Club
Fargo
Goodfellas
Heat
Reservoir Dogs
The Shawshank Redemption

I'm guessing not everyone will agree.

Where's Trainspotting? Leon? Pulp fiction?

Is This not just "films we are allowed to show"

One Tarantino
One Coen Brothers
One Danny Boyle
One Tim Burton
One Pixar film
One dystopian sci-fi film
One Tom Hanks starring film
One Kevin Costner starring film
One Tim Robbins starring film
One Schindler's List

That's 10.
