Sending your child to London

I don't think it's the money that's a problem. The same parents were pushing to spend £75+ on a formal black tie event for them leaving primary school.
many years ago, before you were a twinkle in your dads eye, in Scotland we used to have, what is called a qualifying dance. We invited a partner of choice from the class.

we learnt to dance the gay gordons, dashing white sergeant, eightsome reel and others. we never paid anything as far as I know and certainly didn't have this prom culture. we probably wore our school shorts. didn't get long trousers until secondary school.

I took a girl called Pamela, who later turned out to be a real stunner.

I got put off a bit, as my mother hounded me for I was taking. I told her she would not know her. so I told her. Turned out my mother and her mother were in the same class at school.

I was thinking the Rainforest Cafe was just a touristy restaurant where the staff dressed as tigers and elephants but, having looked at their website, they sound pretty cool... educational tours etc.

On the whole, I really don't understand why people don't want their kids to experience one of the world's top 5 cities. I can understand why someone who mostly only goes to Kings Cross and Euston thinks it's a bit shit though...
Kings Cross is smart as owt these days, they've spent a fortune and years doing it up round there.

Our junior school Christmas parties involved Scottish country dancing. We were paired up and had to do the gay gordons etc. No idea why they thought that was a fun party afternoon as everyone hated it!

In the last year juniors, it was amazing because we were allowed disco lights on and danced to Agadoo and Superman etc

I think we had a barn dance because Scottish country dancing was considered a bit exotic.

Aye, but the area toward Euston station is still a but scruffy (as is the exterior of the station itself). Get off Euston Road and everything's fine though...

'A bit scruffy' ffs

I used to work there in the late 70's.

I know what scruffy is... the local was the Somerstown Coffee House- a 'local pub, for local people' if you get my drift.

...these days it's the equivalent of Hampstead

It's all relative and I know what it was like. All I was initially saying was that a poster earlier in the thread who said that he regularly travels down to the Kings Cross/Euston area and thinks London is a shithole might be biasing his opinion based on the area he mostly goes to.

No issue here.

When I was year 7 we did a trip to Eurodisney/Paris. The couple of days in Paris we were left to our own devices. The only issues were the Ninja stars and porn we bought from "lookie lookie" men.

I assume there would be more supervision these days.

Same here, but it was flick knives disguised as combs the teachers had to confiscate and hand over to the boarder control. A couple lads nearly got us all bared from euro Disney for shop lifting mighty ducks caps too!

Just a straw poll as I'm proper fummin about something!

If you had a child in Year 6 (age 10-11), would you be willing to send them on a school trip to London? It would include travelling down by train, staying in a Youth Hostel for two nights and visiting popular tourist attractions by Tube.

My 10 year old spent a week away on an activity school trip in South Wales.
Rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking and night walks.
No communication with parents allowed.

Of course we thought about him loads but he absolutely loved it.
If there are plenty of teachers should be ok.
Can understand your concern though with a London and a Youth Hostel.
Should be fine and you should have a chat with the organising teacher that would settle your worries.

I don't think I would have an issue. I'd want to know which teachers of course and what all of the plans are for it. But I'm all for travel. I want my kids to do more than me.

My daughter asked about this when she was the same age. I said no.
Fair enough if she wanted to go on her own.

What is your reason to refuse?
