How long can Rafa last?

The hysteria over Benitez on here is a bit over the top.
I personally think hes far too defensive minded and if he was truly world class he'd be at a bigger club, but he's done a decent job only being able to spend what he brings in.
There's plenty on here hail Big Sam as some sort of managerial genius yet he picked up less points per game on average than Benitez did in the season they went down, despite having 30 Games and a transfer window to Benitez's 10.
You can't really have it both ways.
If he keeps them up this season he's done a good job. If he doesn't then he can hardly be declared a managerial genius can he.
A bit of balance is perhaps needed.

"wasted" is a bit harsh for most of them, they've not even had half a season yet.

I was being facetious man.

For the record though, Merino looks a player when on the ball - when he is not, he is a bit like Shelvey {come on down @Reiver }, a bit slow to track back.
Manquillo is useless Fish old boy, take it from one who saw most of his insipid performances.
Joselu is awful infront of goal tho' he can hold it up quite well.
Lejeune ? Looks decent on the ball with time, decent in the air and tackle, but boy does he lack pace.
Murphy - looks like he has something about him with his genuine pace. A bit raw, but experience will help.

Leicester are looking good under Puel and could well nick a draw Saturday - a game you really need to win.

So in three lines you went from he'd get the blame to some of the blame.

Why should he get any? He's not responsible for your start. He's not responsible for the squad that Moyes left you. He can't work miracles if Short doesn't bankroll him. The only differences between him and Rafa is he at least has a window to make things happen and a lot more games to do it in.
He has 20 odd games, of course he will have to take some blame if we're relegated.

No I didn't, I'm saying he'd have to share the blame as would Grayson, Short, Bain and the players.

So, would you care to answer my question?

So just to be clear here, last season Rafa was crap because he only scraped promotion in a piss pot league that Sunderland were looking forward to playing in as they would win every week, now this season Rafa is crap because he only has us 15th with a absolutely horrific team that he has been forced to put together by lack of funds?

How is 35 million a lack of funds ?

Is anyone hysterical ..... I haven't seen anything approaching hysteria.

I get the feeling some people on this board genuinely believe Rafa wanted to buy the likes of Joselu and that he wasn’t totally hamstrung by the money Ashley was prepared to give him.

and another one joins

Peter 123, new to the board and talking bollocks from the off. Surprised ? Divvent be daft.

Sorry I forgot he didn't sign all the shite did he.

Did he really need to go out and pay £5m for another of our ex shite loan RBs ? Surely offering Anita a new contract would've been a better option as cover to the hopeless Yank

Rafa another £5m spunked away

Don’t know what you’re about now, all I’m saying is that the consensus of this place is that our squad is relegation fodder so if that prophecy comes true (par) then logically he can’t be criticised as he’s merely achieved what was expected?

It's relegation fodder because of the shite Rafa bought.

Just because we think your players are shit doesn't mean they should be relegated Burnley have plenty of championship journeymen difference is they've got a manager who can organize them

But but but Rafa's world class man.

TBF Sima it is relegation fodder and if they do go down he won't be criticised. PS who you fancy in the cup draw ?

Why would what posters, on a Sunderland chat forum, think have any bearing on whether or not people criticise Benitez?

No you didn't.

Well that's what I mean so please dont do a 'Fish' and go into an endless hair splitting saga of grammar.

I suspect you're simply avoiding answering the question so I'll leave it there.

But that's exactly how this place operates, so why not.

I always believe in debating subjects with anyone, on here, who's polite and logical.

So allow me to ask a serious question that intrigues me.

Benitez has been at Newcastle for almost 2 years and has brought in a fair number of players. He gained promotion as champions and started well in the PL being 6th after 9 games. However, since that time there's been a series of poor results, with the same group of players, and Newcastle have dropped to 15th.

If this run continues, and Newcastle find themselves in a relegation place, would you blame Benitez in any way? And if Newcastle are relegated again would you place all of the blame on Ashley and totally absolve Benitez as many did the last time you dropped?
None of us would be happy if we went down obviously... but we would not blame Benitez on the whole I think.

Reason- he didn' actually have that much to spend in the season

I don' believe many would criticise Benitez if we dropped. And here's why.

To listen to many on here you would think that Benitez had had a 200million budget.

A cursory glance at the numbers (see below) shows that last season we had a stonking cash surplus (and all those who left had to be replaced by another) and this season a paltry 20m net spend.

Why so low ? ( when PL tv revenues are 5 x this ) ?

Because Ashley was preparing us for sale - no where near enough investment. Benitez was forced to the bargain basement.

Enough said....

He has made some shocking selection choices - his persistence in playing Joselu for starters - some right random gambles (Diame at the weekend) although i agree he wasnt given enough money to massively strengthen a championship team, he has spent poorly in the past (Hanley,Gamez etc). If we were to get relegated I would certainly expect him to shoulder some of the blame.
