Summer 2016 Benitez has the best squad in the championship, spends £54m and then about another £40m the following summer.

Hughton at Brighton and Wagner at Huddersfield started summer 2016 with much weaker teams than Newcastle (especially Huddersfield). Both teams have spent less than Newcastle since summer 2016.

12 games into following season and about 16 months on from that summer, Newcastle are below both Brighton and Huddersfield.

Lots of talk the other day on the radio that Benitez will hand in his resignation if takeover falls through and he does not get funds to spend. Why does he have such a strong bargaining position? Are people still going on about a cup win in 2005?

Because He's been very clever regarding keeping the fans on side, I can't remember seeing him ever coming out and backing the owner (even when they win the championship) plus it's dead easy to keep on saying I need more money to spend to compete with top clubs knowing it would take billions to achieve...Aye very clever is old Rafa...

All three of them have done an excellent job at their respective clubs.
The argument that net spend is irrelevant is nonsense. Otherwise why did Grayson not marginally improve our side after relegation with his limited spending (since top players lIke Pickford, Defoe and all leaving is apparently irrelevant).

TBF it is not really a dig at Newcastle, I have been a big critic of Benitez for about 10 years due to Liverpool supporting mates etc. The bloke other than last year (thanks to Brighton going on holiday early) has been a failure and a catastrophic failure at times in the league for 12 years.
Carry on sir. I'm not a fan of Benitez either. He is good at organising etc. but I'm yet to be convinced he is up there with the very best as some would claim.

Pathetic and petty. There has been 11 games.

Benitez is an elite coach and manager.

Which one of the 3 managers has been to the UEFA Champions League Final 4 times and irrespective of silly short term comparisons is adored and respected universally by his fan base?

Probably one of the most relevant things to look at when evaluating a transfer window, as £ brought in will show how much the squad has been decimated. Then you can see how much you've spent of that £ to rebuild a squad.

For example if Man Utd sold every player and brought in circa £750m, they'd then have to replace that squad. For example if they spent £600m replacing the squad, it would be foolish to go around saying "they've spent £600m, they should be winning the Champions League".

No probs . I do not think he is a bad manager, just not a great manager like somehow people believe.

Benitez has managed Liverpool (with a prime Gerrard and Torres), Inter Milan (reigning Italian and european champions), Real Madrid and Napoli (spent more money than any other Italian club in his tenure of 2 years), yet he did not win a league and in most cases took the team backwards in the end.

If I was to be petty I would say there have been 12 games and not 11 games ;)

You make a good point and it is all relevant. In your scenario of Man Utd selling £750m and bringing in £600m worth of players, relative to that then it would not be expected to win the title. However if Man Utd next summer were to sell Pogba for £250m but then bring in £150m worth of players then aiming for the title would be relevant. Just as relevant as Newcastle having the strongest squad in the championship even after the sale of £30m Sissoko which massaged the net spend figures.

Benitez only had the best squad in the championship after he spent some of the money the club raised through selling off mercenaries. I wouldn't agree that Brighton were "much weaker" than Newcastle. In Knockaert they had one of the best attacking players in that league, Dunk was superb and so on. Newcastle weren't streets ahead of them or owt.

This summer, both Huddersfield and Brighton spent more than Newcastle United.

Newcastle are currently 2pts behind Brighton, but obviously all that could change by Monday, so it's daft to judge the teams on how they're doing on one particular round of fixtures, when they're so closely grouped together. Were Newcastle bottom and the other two midtable, you could criticise Benitez for the job he's don.e As it stands we're doing all right for a newly promoted side, and Benitez has done well on a budget that's smaller than the other two.

It's pretty obvious why he has a strong bargaining position, isn't it?

All 3 have done tremendously to be fair to be mid table in the premiership. Seems a bit obsessed to be comparing a manager who is doing very well to other mangers who are also doing very well.
