Uefa don't recognise it as an official competition because they didn't sanction it. But obviously starting the uefa cup was a response to the prestige of the fairs cup at the time. Fifa still recognise it as a major honour though.
Would Sunderland never mention it if they had won it and Newcastle hadn't? Looking at it objectively i think they would. It can be called tinpot etc, but teams saw it as prestigious, at the time there was only the european cup and cup winners cup as other routes into europe, so teams finishing 2nd or 3rd were happy enough to take part in the fairs cup.
Its hard to take the red and white blinkers off, but if you can for a second, I'm sure you'd agree that Sunderland would celebrate it as well.
Edit:I'm aware we finished 10th that season, and the competition had a one club one city rule, coupled with other events like both Manchester clubs entering the european cup, Liverpool qualifying for the fairs cup meaning everton couldn't enter, etc etc loads of things went in our favour to actually get there.
