I've met some truly mad Sunderland supporters .....

I will buy it but wonder what relevance it has to this thread.
None really to be honest. I'm just making a point on soldiers have a tendency towards violence just like some footy fans. The level of violence is to a different degree in that book. You will enjoy it.....probably!

I think many people think the threat of sectarian violence or at least serious violence has gone,it hasn't.
Anyhow did you ever come across the Chilton Trojans ( Sunderland supporters) during your excursions ? All skin heads, my grandad ( served for 35 years ) used to get a bottle of whiskey bought for him on Xmas because he used to be on the door at the legion. He didn't like the fuckers though because they wore nazi and SS gear.

Not to my knowledge mate but I'm sure one of the posters on here will know them ...... this thread has been a real eye opener.

It was a league cup game in 78 we lost one nil late on to a Dave ARMSTRONG goal

That sounds right.

I remember being kept in for ages to the point where some people lost it and started breaking up seats.

When they let us out there were loads of Boro waiting and the police just walked off.

There were so many identical backstreets we couldn't find our car and kept being asked who we supported ....... f***ing awful night that was.

As Hutch said, the lads in the opposite open corner at Boro were Vauxies and some Gateshead lads. We had 3 buses on, must have been 200 of us, loads just crammed on three to a seat. Got stuck in traffic a mile from Ayresome, so we all piled off and walked. Near the ground it was going off all the way down past the Holgate end to the away end, mounted police were trying to keep us apart.
In the ground it was Sunderland at the back, Boro pushed down past the middle and a big open space inbetween. It all kicked off as the teams were coming out and more a less rumbled on for most of the game. Boro had a big game mob in that corner but they more than met their match that day.

My view of hooligans has obviously been all what I have seen on the TV. When you hear about groups of lads kicking the shit out of one defenceless fucker on the floor or kids and women been hurt it tends to make your mind up about these activities. That said I have never witnessed any so I'm going off what im being told. Reading this thread puts a different light on it.
The one about the lad kicking someone in the nuts was a good story mind. Hats off to him.

It was in fact :-
Sept 13 1977 it was a replay as we drew 2-2 at RP ( with Rowell getting late equaliser).

That's exactly as I remembered it.

Waves of Boro were charging but were beaten back every time, they must have been really cheesed off

Sept 13 1977 not 78. Almost 30000 there.

Many clubs did have organised groups of hooligans, IMO we didn't. We were just a big support who would fight their corner if need be. We looked after each other when we were away. Apart from Boro away and the mags at home I don't remember us causing any trouble.
Other posters may disagree but I am talking from my experience and I didn't know the vauxies etc.
Remember that in those days trouble was nearly always guaranteed. If we were faced with it we nearly always dealt with it apart from some London games.
The organised stuff for us came after my time.

Just seen this. Must say my background involved a degree of violence but have to tell you I do not like violence full stop. I will however buy the book, thanks.

We could barely organise a map to find our way to away grounds

Well maybe I have been a bit quick to judge. I won't be looking to find out any time soon as I'm nearly 42 and have got one of them jobs where you have to keep your nose clean.
Anyhow the book is called "The Nemesis File".

Retaliation iirc, but maybe we got it if first now & again ;)
You are right of course. Can you remember a game at WBA when you and Sheff waltzed into the pub at the side of their end at 11.02 am as if you owned it only to find a gang of Monkeyhangers had beat you to it ?
That was us. We met you two loads of times.
Probably about 1975. At the end of the game WBA came across the pitch to shake our hands but when we went down to the front to welcome them they turned nasty.

You really can't knock the lad's support can you ....... almost always see him when I'm there.
He's as loyal as they come. I spent a year or two via my ex BIL going to the away games with Davy, mid 80's or so. It was an experience!
