Aye I was a 15 year old . I'd never seen anything like it that day . I remember one of our lot got knocked over by a red Mini and the mounted coppers steaming into us to prevent us from turning the car over with the occupants still inside . Mad day all in all
Canny write up on the Stoke forum .
Cracking post on there:

"I remember the coaches of Sunderland fans just coming and coming and coming.

They were a second division team and I just never envisaged this invasion.

I don't think I ever saw so many red and white scarves at Stoke in my whole life. You hoped they were Stokies but that little bit of black on the scarves told you they were not.

I was 14 years old and the Sunderland contingent took my breath away that day and I knew, although I never admitted it, that our fans had a way to go to match that sort of passion.

I can admit it now, it was truly humbling."

Those were the days.

We've made reference to loads of great away day action back in the day. Crossed my mind of action at home.... Thinking more about away fans taking over or attempting to take over town bars pre-match. As well as trying to take Roker Park. Couple of personal interventions include the Mags in the Continental circa 78. Massive western style salon brawl. Mags again in the Ivy House this time, prob the 90's - so called Gremlins. Remember a battle outside of the Fort with Boro. Also remember been in the Wheatsheaf and it kicking off with Pompey. Another infamous engagement I heard about but wasn't involved in was Man U stopping by the Round Robin on Ford. They came off the 690 and stopped by for pre-match drinks and were routed by locals!

I've said this before but I'm sure some people in branch buses didn't see that much trouble, in those days, but that's a world away from travelling independently from a different part of the country.

Coming out of the away end at Spurs or Cardiff and seeing the coach people being escorted off to the right while you had to turn left, to where you'd unfortunately parked, was not funny in the slightest.

We may as well of had 'kick me' written on the back of our donkey jackets

Maddest day for me (ive told this before on here), Bus (antique thing always remember the company name Wells Fargo) broke down on the way to West Ham think we were on the A1 oil all over the road. So we took off across the fields and found a lovely little country pub. A few of us got in first and ordered some beers then the rest arrived :D there was food all along the bar and it didnt take long for the food fight to start (the few locals abandoned ship). Food everywhere all over us the walls the bars it was like Tiswas.
After about half an hour the Police arrived to chuck us out, someone told them we had nowhere to go so they ordered a coach to take us to West Ham (ive no idea how that was sorted?) This luxury coach turns up and we set off to London. We arrived outside the ground just as they were opening the gates to let people out, we piled in through the gates got on to the terrace just to hear the final whistle, we turn round and back to the coach that i believe was still outside? (no idea what the score was?).
We set off home and some of the lads decided the driver should make a stop somewhere for beer. After some persuasion we stopped at Stamford , pulled up outside this pub where the local thugs were hanging about (who took one look and off they scarpered) and we proceeded to get pissed until the driver rounded us up. On the way back someone kept hitting sleepers over the head with a bottle (just a tap) Get some sleep lad when the startled sleeper woke up.
Great laugh all day though some of the details are fairly vague due to the amount of alcohol involved.

Mid 70's on those long distance trips leaving after the pubs shut on the friday night, we (Hebburn) used to share a bus with Jarra and there was a couple of brothers from Jarra would be on like chalk and cheese. One of them was a quiet lad, didnt seem as pissed as the rest of us but his brother, worked in the pits, was complete opposite, add alcohol instant psycho. One trip over night down to Bristol Rovers, usual stuff getting there about 8am finding somewhere for brekky then finding a pub that would open early for us. We got into this pub as soon as the doors were unbolted and the drinks were flowing and some Bristol folk came in. From nothing the place just erupted like a wild west saloon with glasses, tables, chairs flying round and windows crashing through. Turns out one of our lot (we suspect psycho brother) had goosed one of the barmaids arse and the locals took the hump. Police arrive and clear the pub so we're all put on a bus up to Eastville. Off the bus and walk towards the ground which happens to be the home end and as we're not quiet singing our Sunderland songs the locals welcome us with a hail of stones, many coming over the fence from inside the ground. Jarra psycho takes it on himself to launch a one man assault at their end, launching himself up the corrugated fence and tangling with the barbed wire round the top. He hauls himself up on top of the fence with his arms covered in blood off the wire, growls at the locals who just shit themselves and scattered back onto their terrace. I think we had a quiet night in Oxford on the way home and he was like the Tasmanian devil again there with the locals.

Remember getting picked up by Frankies bus, usual place (Wentbridge Services, Donny), usual time (about 2am) but can't remember where to - for some reason got south coast in mind. On the way found out there was 1 lad onboard who didn't like football?? Turned out Frankie & others offered him a lift to their local chippy on the bus from the pub as pissing down (& he was well pissed). They'd only kidnapped him & he had to ring his missus & explain ;) . On the Sat night out ( somewhere) he was walking about with a woolly toy horse for his bairn!!! All a bit of a haze tbh, but the jist is right!!

Stoke aren't the only ones to remember a visit from the Roker Army back in the day...

Yup, loads of sense, I was thinking the other day ( after this thread started) that away games seemed to be either we took loads & took over or it was knowing nods e.g. down Coldblow Lane ;)

poor turn out in this one too surprisingly.
Less than 3500 in the Leazes, probs under 3000 if truth be known as we'd blown a 2-0 lead at home to draw 2-2 the previous week. Most had given up hope, but we hadnt - top night lol

In the spirit of these posts, and a story I've told before on here, a memorable occasion was when we crossed paths with the Chelsea Headhunters in the Roker Hotel. Cant remember the year but it must have been 1986 or 1987. There was 5 of us and we bumped into about 10 0f them.

Kevin or Mackie from Hexham was raging because the same people (he actually recognised two of them) had attacked him along with women and kids on the tube on the way to Stamford Bridge for the semi-final in 1985.

They were sitting in the Roker Hotel with their feet on the table laughing arrogantly when we arrived.

Mackie told us to leave to even up the numbers. 10 onto 3.

I've never seen 10 people take a worse kicking. The bar staff were intervening to save them.
