I've met some truly mad Sunderland supporters .....

Have to give a mention of " Sheff " & " Billy" ( now from Bishop of dog at QPR fame) who I travelled by train with when we went by train, early mid 70's when there was sometimes 10 or less "lads" at some away games. The stories we could tell !! ;) ;)
Remember bumping into " Sheff" many times, all over the country.

true win lose draw say how it was happy days .mind i had sum good lads around me bit older than me from both sland n gateshead peterlee the best ..fact
Weren't u in a picture I posted last year (that TT forwarded to me) drinking cans of some now defunct beer on a coach with a load of chaps who looked well capable of handling themselves ? Cracking fashion sense too:lol:

Think the maddest character I've ever met in over 50 years on the road following the lads was a guy from Sheffield who never missed a match home or away. In fact he used to hitch hike to most games. Often jumping coaches heading north after matches. We were match day mates between 72 and 78 then he just disappeared off the face of the earth???????

If it's the same lad we knew him as Scottie and he was absolutely crackers ...... we'd pick him up in Sheffield and never be sure if he'd make it back to the car.

If he didn't we'd just know he'd find his way home like some manic homing pigeon

As a couple of examples, He wheeled me around Cardiff centre in a wheelbarrow waiting for the pubs to open, bet we didn't have more than 50 there all day & we both got chased off Fratton station at Pompey over some garage roofs, just the 2 of us on the train ;) , the year about 20 of us stormed their end & they ran... until they realised they outnumbered us about 20 to 1 ;)

that was the vauxies gateshead shared bus leaving sland at midnight to brighton great lads
Did anyone know the 'Sunderland skinheed' who was mentioned in the far corner book? He was from ashington I think
mackie from hexham.

Hi Wakey, is the guy Sheff you mention the same guy I referred to. I knew him by his name. Is/was he JS?
He was covered in tattoos , including his neck. His family originally hailed from Amble? One of his many tats said Amble. Used to wear his hair in that 70's feathered look? Always curious to know what ever happened to him?

Scottie is similar to his surname. We travelled by train when he had his job in the brewery, otherwise he/we would hitch or jump the train. We travelled all owa together for years, home games were always on the 08.45 from Leeds ;)

Sounds like the same lad mate.

I don't think we ever made arrangements with him ..... he'd just drift in and out of our vision and we'd back each other up if we were attacked.

I remember being at Burnley, when we had both full backs sent off, and we came out to a massive ambush ....... he just ran at them and we had no option but to follow just because of his personality!

John S, yes that's him, tats everywhere. Last time I saw him was at the semi at Old Stratford looking for tickets. He was with his eldest son & me with mine, both brick netties. He'd married the Sheff U skinbird he lived with. He was getting near his pension he said, prob true as he was older than me & I'm 59 today

Does anyone know :-

1. the lad who runs on the pitch at end of 73 cup final and is in picture hugging Monty and stokoe ?

2. Eddie the eagle - Wigan 88

3. the lad who won us the LC home game v Chelsea when he ran on pitch and stewards took so long to sort, Chelsea went "cold" and we beat em 2-1. hope he got a ticket for final as we were dead without his intervention !
