This'll be the Torygrapgh barred in Liverpool

Great article. Phil Neal is an absolute arsehole and many representatives of Liverpool, even Kennedy in the article refuse to blame Liverpool fans for what happened and they were to blame. That said I hate it when people make a correlation between Heysel and Hillsborough almost as if you can make sly digs at the latter because of the former. We have already had that with JFT39 type stuff on here.

I've had a Liverpool supporters trying to blame other clubs like West Ham, Luton etc because they had fans there specifically as a hooligan element and to cause trouble. They even said the Mags were there, surely that can't be true? Why can't they just accept they were at fault? The mind boggles.

Wouldn't give and interview on the hysel incident unless he was paid. f***ing hell what a wanker.

Hillsborough and Heysel really need to be separated. Completely different tragedies brought about by completely different catalysts.

One tragedy was largely forgotten, the other horrifically covered up. That shouldn't have happened in either case

"At a time when the sport is wedded to a culture of vicarious grief, where black armbands and minutes' applause are the norm rather than the exception"

Well put.

Candle vigil at anfield today........has it taken 30 yrs to remember what happened and who caused it?
It's very strange how quiet they are on this matter compared to hillsbrough.

Excellent article. I always found Phil Neal's comments in this article revealing about what kind of man he is.

tbf Neal has done countless interviews and appearances relating to Heysel. Did Jamie Jackson waive his fee for that article?

This is a damning legacy

"There are voices in Italy that go much further. Caremani, who has been sharply critical in his published work of Liverpool's limp-wristedness in the wake of Heysel, makes the incendiary contention that 96 deaths at Hillsborough could never have occurred if the lessons of 1985 had been properly absorbed. "From 1985 to 1989, the English were only angry about being banned from Europe," he says. "Heysel and Hillsborough had three important similarities: the disorganisation of the authorities, the behaviour of the police, and the fact that innocent people died. If the English had understood Heysel, Hillsborough today would only be the name of a stadium, not of a disaster."

Yep, agree with that...

i remember watching hillsborough news footage from outside both the liverpool end and also the forest end taken at the same time. the liverpool end which has been widely shown shows chaos with the mass of lads trying to force their way in and little or no control from the police. and of the forest end which was generally well behaved with hardly any queues or fuss.

Liverpool fans attacked and killed Italian fans and we all got punished for it. So those saying how can you blame "all" Liverpool fans, please tell me why "all" of England was punished for their actions. Liverpool fans were notorious for their actions in Europe for years leading up to Heysal, it wasn't a surprise it was them.

And I'm guessing you've took the time to read up on why this was the case?

Phil Neal is one of my most hated people in football. This sums him up, arrogant wanker, bloke is an absolute f***ing ****.

Heysel was a criminal act, and those responsible were sent to prison. There was a conclusion, which is why it fell out of the public debate. Hillsborough was kept in the new due to the cover up.

Liverpool have a memorial to the tragedy attached to their stadium - Juventus does not.

Liverpool have marked every major anniversary of the event, sometimes with memorial games played in a sold-out Anfield.

This idea that Liverpool FC is in denial about it is absolute bullshit. The very worst type of football partizanship. "I don't like a football team, so I'll pretend that a city are Heysel apologists". Grow the fuck up.
