A Sunderland supporting mate, from Nottingham, went to Heysel with some Liverpool supporters who had a spare ticket.

Since that day he despises Liverpool and refuses to watch them even if they play Sunderland, not even on TV.

He said he was totally disgusted by many of the Liverpool supporters and that their behaviour before during & after the game was atrocious. They were openly looting shops, walking away from bars without paying bills & boasting about gaining entry without tickets. They had picked fights with locals & Juve supporters and my mate, who's just a really nice daft lad, was frightened that he'd be caught up in it.
He's not a good person to pick an argument with, if you try defending Liverpool, he was appalled at the difference between the behaviour, in the city, between the English & Italians.

I was in France, at that time, near the Italian border and it wasn't a good time to be English, you kept your head down.
That wasn't hard, it was hanging down in shame ... this was broadcast on French television and I'll never forget it.

It was a horrendous night and one I don't think Liverpool fans have ever taken proper responsibility for, fair play to Lawrenson as he seems to be the only one ever to get interviewed and speak up about it. Btw what was that dick Platini playing at, sums the bloke up to me - wanker.

He's lying when he says the Juventus players were unaware of the deaths ...... I've seen others interviewed who said they knew.
 
Have we decided how much is the right amount to remember yet? Hillsborough is too much and makes you a set of candle waving victims. Heysel is too little and you're a set of murderous bastards.

Do you want every person who ever supported Liverpool to take responsibility for the action of others? Are the ones who got prison sentences not enough?

I think i can understand peoples sentiment on this sonetimes though.
its as if the whole country has to stand up and take notice every anniversary of Hillsborough, no matter how much time has passed.
Heysel though seems to go under the radar and be a touchy subject. The complete opposite.
i think i can sometimes understand the sentiment & feeling towards Liverpool based on that:neutral:

They never will.it was the grounds fault.it was not theres. I bet lawrenson hets some stick for that.he has broken the anfield law there,how dare he speak about something that was there fault.
He is a complete bellend platini and people call for him to head fifa! Hes an arrogant tosser.

I've spoken to people in Liverpool about it mate when I worked there, the response 99% of the time was "it was terrible, but....." , like Hillsborough nearly everyone knows someone who was there and the stories get handed down but like it says in the article it's almost expunged from their history. If you think they acted with dignity and remorse then that is your opinion.
 
It's the same with the Bradford fire, that gets very little attention overall.

They sing justice for the 96, why not include the 39 people that died at Heysel? Justice for the 135.

Hillsborough has a lot more baggage with it due to the subsequent cover up but the you never hear Heysel mentioned on Merseyside do you.
 
I was In Paris with the school at the time. I was 12 and went into the tv room to watch the match with some mates.

Was informed by thr French there that we were English scum and not welcome and to get out. I remember it turning a little Nasty. Ever since I've not liked the French or Liverpool.

This whole 'no football fan should ever go to a match and not return home' thing...

Why don't they include Heysel? Same thing, people went to a football match and died. Why not include Bradford? All cases where people died at football matches. I understand there is the injustice of the Hillsborough tragedy, but it's an injustice to be killed anywhere.

I wouldn't have thought it was a subject for extremist views, there's nothing black & white in regards to either tragedy. It's not a question of making an outright 'decision' more that people should be able to discuss it and from that a general consensus will emerge. The Liverpool supporters generally seem to avoid the subject of Heysel so it's only fair that everyone else should be allowed to voice their opinions.

I think it's fair to say that every person who ever supported Liverpool will say they were deeply affected by Hillsborough.
I felt partly responsible when Sunderland supporters, in the 70's, would sing 'he's a wog a wog' at visiting black players.
I suppose it's down to the individual, and their conscience how much responsibility they take.
