Defoe

Will be a great signing in regards of giving the rest of the team a lift in the sense that they now know that their thankless graft might actually be rewarded with an end product. It will also be great for the lads on the fringes of the team. A year ago the likes of Buckley, Bridcutt etc. couldn't have dreamt that they'd soon be playing in the same side as Defoe and training alongside someone who's got the T-shirt will also give them extra impetus to push on and keep the first team on their toes. Hopefully it'll get Wickham's arse (and head) into gear too. Will be a very good signing for the club in terms of more than just goals imo.

It's what you have to do to get players like him, he's what 32 say he's still got it is it unfair to say he will still over something in two years time?, players like Philips shearing ham crouch all offered something at the sort of age Defoe would be near the end of the deal.

Phillips and Sheringham were technical finishers, whereas Defoe's game relies more on pace.

He could change his game - like Yorke - but it seems to me like a short term fix signed on a long term contract. We've been here before. We have a finite budget and Defoe is likely to draw a significant amount from it long after he can contribute regularly on the pitch.

I think he could do well for us this season, and I'd be happy if we got him on a loan deal or 1 year contact. 3.5 years (as reported) seems absurd to me. A deal struck between a good agent and panicky club.

Why are you so sure?

Can you everyone being happy with SAFC starting the 2015/16 season with Defoe leading the line?

I can't.

I'd put money on him being here no longer than 18 months. In the period he is here as long as he steers clear of injury he will be a very important player for us.

Where does he go in 18 months? Who will buy him?

If we're going to stay up we need more goals so this has to be positive. Football wise Defoe is a good fit for us and gives us something we don't currently have.

My main concern is that he doesn't come across as a Sunderland type of individual. A bit metropolitan. Might hanker for the bright lights. Could be wrong, but he doesn't seem as natural a fit as say Fletcher.

3.5 years for a 32 year old with a history of injury niggles and whose game relies on bursts of pace?

Embarrassing business by the club.
lol

Its not just that though. He has a very good shot. Seen him place finishes and seen him smack them from 25 yards. Regardless, he has quality and thats what we need.

I've always thought he was almost a carbon copy of super Kev.

I couldn't give a shit if he loves the lights etc and doesn't fit at all as long as he scores the goals to move us up the table. Fletcher might seem a fit to the club but his lack of goals means that makes zero difference.

If he scores goals form now till then there will always be a newly promoted team or a London team willing to take him in that period, look at the supposed interest now he'd be at qpr if the board weren't on the verge of sacking saggy face.

I wouldn't be happy if we signed Robbie Keane.

Would you?

I made the point earlier that Defoe is a Keane-esque signing, only with marginally deeper pockets. Hence reference to Yorke - a player that achieve success as a stopgap, but was also part of one of our biggest issues in recent years, being saddled with expensive dead wood.

My biggest issue with the reported contract isn't the salary, but the duration. Why would we want Defoe in 3 years time?

Comparing this signing to Robbie Keane? What on earth are you on about?

Also you seem to be forgetting that Yorke was a good player while he was here and far from being deadwood was a key player in our first season back in the premiership. He was only given a one year extension to his contract at the end of his initial 2 year deal. Hardly saddling us with dead wood.

Also in 3 years time who's to say that we won't be offering Defoe a coaching role? Or something similar?

Getting rid of Altidore and gaining a proven scorer and someone who will create space / chances for others. Can't see why anyone wouldn't be happy with this tbh. Could be just what we need to give everyone a lift and push on in the 2nd half of the season

No one whatsoever is saying that Defoe is worse than Altidore.

The comparison is between Defoe and the plethora of other short-term options that should be available to a sporting director who has had 6 months to plot spending his £4m a year salary.

And since we're talking stats, Danny Graham had 1 in 3.6 at Swansea.

Slight difference being Defoe has 1 in 3.1 over 400 games.

Graham had played 54.
