Defoe

Worse than a striker with a 1 in 34 record?

Because if he isn't then he's going to be a good signing.

It's clear Defoe is better than Altidore. I'm not saying Defoe is a bad player. It's not black and white and I gave my opinion on that a few pages back.

I really hope it works.

We are replacing a donkey with a goal scorer. End of.

Ah, you said 'End of'. I'm convinced now, don't know why someone didn't explain it so clearly to me before. Cheers mate.

Anyone else get sick of the negative anti Sunderland press.

I think all clubs must be fully transparent on transfer fees. As if we're paying 14million for him as reported...

I'm absolutely buzzing about this signing but I can understand peoples doubts and their are definite question marks.

1. Does he still have "pace to burn" at 32 years of age? If he does, how long will that last, surely not the 3.5 years of his deal.
2. At 32 years of age, is a 3.5 year contract on a reported £80k a week good financial sense?
3. He was injured a lot for Toronto which restricted him to 22 games in an entire season, as time ticks by, those injuries could become more frequent and take longer to recover.

The fact we've replaced Altidore with Defoe is a massive improvement and I'm chuffed so for now, those little doubts can do one.

And? Are you saying they're shite or something?

I wouldn't be happy if we signed Robbie Keane.

Would you?

I made the point earlier that Defoe is a Keane-esque signing, only with marginally deeper pockets. Hence reference to Yorke - a player that achieve success as a stopgap, but was also part of one of our biggest issues in recent years, being saddled with expensive dead wood.

My biggest issue with the reported contract isn't the salary, but the duration. Why would we want Defoe in 3 years time?

Looks at the comparison if you really need to. Bloody hell man.

Anyone thinking Defoe is not good enough for us needs to take up another sport, football is not for them.
Based on the past he is a cracking signing, 12 months however away at his age he could've lost something. Still in a swap for jozy plus say thirty k more in wages it's worth a punt he's still the same lad.

In terms of injuries I'd say look at Wes Brown since Poyet came here. We seem to have a backroom staff who know what they're doing for once.

No one whatsoever is saying that Defoe is worse than Altidore.

The comparison is between Defoe and the plethora of other short-term options that should be available to a sporting director who has had 6 months to plot spending his £4m a year salary.

And since we're talking stats, Danny Graham had 1 in 3.6 at Swansea.

Well if you've outbidded the likes of QPR and Leicester then I can't see him taking much of a wage cut with the huge interest in him. Hope you have a relegation clause in there at least.
