Defoe

Ok, been out of the loop. Would this be a permanent signing then? Whats the figures involved? Not reading 50 odd pages like

3.5 years for a 32 year old with a history of injury niggles and whose game relies on bursts of pace?

Embarrassing business by the club.
lol

I wouldn't be happy if we signed Robbie Keane.

Would you?

I made the point earlier that Defoe is a Keane-esque signing, only with marginally deeper pockets. Hence reference to Yorke - a player that achieve success as a stopgap, but was also part of one of our biggest issues in recent years, being saddled with expensive dead wood.

My biggest issue with the reported contract isn't the salary, but the duration. Why would we want Defoe in 3 years time?
It's what you have to do to get players like him, he's what 32 say he's still got it is it unfair to say he will still over something in two years time?, players like Philips shearing ham crouch all offered something at the sort of age Defoe would be near the end of the deal.

He was a delicious striker.

9-12 more than the useless plank we are swapping him for then

He's a better option than Altidore, but that's hardly the point.

Neither player has a significant value on the open market really, albeit for very different reasons.

The question we should be asking is "is he the answer to our goalscoring issues", because that's why he was signed. I'd suggest that he might be til the end of this season, and definitely isn't beyond that.

At 32, defoe still has a good 3 seasons in him yet, strikers retire around the age of 36, look at teddy sheringham, still winning tropies and scoring goals in his mid to late thirties !

I'd put money on him being here no longer than 18 months. In the period he is here as long as he steers clear of injury he will be a very important player for us.

Why? He's 32 not 40, if he still has it now he will have it next season.

Why are you so sure?
