why not just turn the clock back 10 minutes at sheffield station and trick the cockneys into thinking it's quicker and spend the money on summit else

Silly me, i could have sworn the railways were sold off years ago to the private sector. How about they use there profits instead of public money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Another valid point.

What do you expect, most of the money made in this country is down south, so it makes sense that that's where most investment goes.

The north east contributes practically fuck all to the countries finances.

Think about a business, you're going to invest your money where you'll get the most return. The country is a business, and in business there's no room for clingons like the north east.

Fuck me

Got to say, I totally disagree with that. Its like a vicious circle - that's where the money is, so that's where the investment goes. And I think the economy is totally imbalanced as a result. It should be the role of a government to invest in some of the 'poorer' parts of the country - London will get a shit load of private investment.

Nah, fuck us, leave us to rot.

Am I right though?

People always complain that more money should be invested in the north east, but from a business point of view you can clearly see why most investment goes down south, because that's where they'll get a bigger return on the investment.

I agree with what you're saying. I'm just saying, if you were running a business, you'd probably do exactly what the government are doing. If it were a business, the north east would be a loss leading store.

How about the 100+ years before the 80's when the north of england carried the entire country or should we just forget about that.

Another valid point.

Isn't Network Rail a non-profit making entity? they own the track but any profit is supposedly reinvested into the infrastructure?

Whether that works and whether they should charge the various service providers more for using them, which would in turn increase fares is I suppose open to debate.

No, not at all. But the amount of money needed to raise the north-east so that it's contributing financially to the country like other parts of the country are would be massive, and something which I just don't think is feasible at the moment.

The government are obviously looking at places where they can put money that will have maximum affect.

How many people in the north east travel by train per year? How many people down south travel by train (I reckon it's way more), so it makes sense that more investment in the lines should go down there.

Yeah pity it all down south

Try taking a look at the rail system down south then compare it to the north.

Doesn't the rail system down south have to cope with way more passengers than up here though?

is this:

A) a bad thing for the NE
B) a good thing for the NE

If it didn't happen at all, what would be the outcome for the NE.
