Excellent summation
The military wing of the SS and responsible for the deaths of millions civilians.
No-one who was a frontline member of that organisation can ever say they didn't want to be a part of what they were doing. You had to volunteer to join the SS.
Indeed. I am also fascinated by old tunnels. Been in one or two anarl..
Get yourself to Colditz, they have re-opened the old tunnels, well worth

Think something like 65% weren't Germans with the largest proportions made up of ther baltic states such as lituania etc one of the reasons why there was so many atrocoties in Russia and then Stalin killed many in the baltics after the war in revenge.
I believe holland had the largest contingent of men fighting under the SS banner.
Without reading every post.... The SS were indeed a brutal part of the nazi regime and were responsible for some horrible crimes against pow's, civilians and jews. They also produced some stunning results on the battlefield. There were many different division of the SS ie Liebstandarte, Das Reich etc but there were indeed Ukrainian ones, Dutch and a few others and according to a book I read a small British SS detatchment. Can't remember the name of the book but it was superb
