The book actually confirms some of your post about the Baltic members of Einsatzgruppen and paramilitary police forces but advances the theory that it was a plan of the Germans (Heydrich & Himmler) to encourage local "spontaneous" actions so as to reinforce the idea of most Europeans supporting Nazi policies and encourage further recruitment to their side be it in death squads or in a military capacity i.e. SS Freiwilligen Divisions. Actually a bit of a misnomer as later in the war it was more conscription than volunteering.

there was along history of pogroms in the area , it didnt take much for the locals to turn on the jews

Added to by Nazi properganda regarding Jewish links to the 'Bolsheviks' who had just left and hadn't been to kind to the local populations.

True - Baltic states don't have a great record in this area; and there were plenty of volunteers after the Germans invaded. They Balts had suffered terribly at the hands of the century's other great tyrant, Stalin, and the Nazis played on that to urge the population to take it out on the Jews.

er, when? the russians only really occupied the baltic states after the germans

The military wing of the SS and responsible for the deaths of millions civilians.

No-one who was a frontline member of that organisation can ever say they didn't want to be a part of what they were doing. You had to volunteer to join the SS.

Originally and the criteria was extremely rigourous, but they relaxed the rules particularly after invading USSR. Himmler also wanted to widen the appeal for National Socialism across Europe but with the Germans holding the reins.

Aye.

Himmler originally wanted SS men to delibrately fuck about to create more Ayran children for the future of the SS which was to become a psuedo-religious sect if Himmler had got his way but many serving SS officers weren't happy with the idea of infidelity so they sacked it off.

I find the SS fascinating and deplorable at the same time.

Seconded.

New Teutonic knights to 'civilize' the Wilde Ost and spread the Aryan dogma. Kids kidnapped and brought up as Nazi's, women 'imported' from Nordic nations to provide breeding stock for the SS etc.

Gustav Lombard, (waffen ss divisional commander )on receiving the order, advised his Battalion that "In future not one male Jew is to remain alive, not one family in the villages."

Throughout the next weeks, soldiers of SS Cavalry Regiment 1 under Lombard's command murdered an estimated 11,000 Jews and more than 400 dispersed soldiers of the Red Army

let us be clear that on countless occaisions waffen ss soldiers formed the shooting parties for the murder of millions of civilians

so they were good soldiers aswell, the former cannot be ignored

I'm perfectly willing to accept that many soldiers in the Wehrmacht were just soldiers doing their job, but the SS and all it's subsequent divisions were a terrorist organisation and nothing else.

Loads of them were as bad and as involved but weren't as politicized or indoctrinated. From top to bottom the German Armed forces knew what was going to happen from the start.

Mein Kampf was in every library in Germany for 15 yrs with everything spelled out in there.

If Hitler was a better writer WWII might not have happened.

So many copies of Mein Kampf sold. So few actually read.

I think he actually dictated it (with Hess doing the transcription of the first volume IIRC). It's odd that such a good orator should dictate such a tedious book.

I guess no editing took place and it ended up being a transcription of him rambling off the top of his head what he thought.
