Its poor goalkeeping to punch the ball if your path to the ball is not blocked, you said he had a clear run?

He had two choices, take a risk and come off his line and maybe get clean hands on the ball, was a good cross, or since his defender was favorite to head the ball stay on the line and see where the headed ball landed.

Our defender watched the ball into the back of the net, that's not Gordons fault.

One thing I've never quite got about those who criticise Gordon about his 'commanding of the area'; it's Mignolet's biggest weakness IMO, as I think he looks very uneasy on crosses and aerial attacks in general.

I give him the benefit of the doubt though as I know how difficult it is, and there are very few keepers who are excellent at it.

you've nailed the whole thing at the end of your posts, people criticise gordon for it, but love somebody who is just as bad if not worse.

It really is a dying art and only the top top keepers do it.

I think Kilgallon's subsequent substitution tells a story on its own. A challenge of any sort would have been enough it was really weak defending.

He used to be a keeper who came for everything, now he really is glued to his line. There were a few freekicks/crosses that Gordon came for today that Mignolet never would have attempted to get to.

I honestly have no idea where the ''Gordon doesn't command his box'' myth comes from. It just sounds like some lazy cliche that people throw at him just so they can criticise.

For me it's that people who lay the criticism on him don't realise quite how few goalkeepers do what they are asking.

If he 'commanded' to the standard that some of the criticisers claim he should, he'd be one of the best keepers in the world.

But should he have come for the ball when a defender is between the ball and the keeper.
Its all about opinions. i know the ball was played into the 6yd box but a defender was marking Kevin Davies (or was supposed to be) I think it was Kilgallon, he was wrong side of his man and got in front of him. I would not put all the blame on Gordon.
And as for his injury's. He was rushed back by Roy Keane. He played one game when we needed him and had to be taken off after 20 Min's, you cant blame the lad for that. That has to be placed at the managers door.
That Injury then required surgery, was it because he is made of glass or because he was rushed back? i think the later.
Don't get me wrong he makes mistakes and the MIG has had a very good season for a young keeper, But I think Gordon the the better all round keeper
 
just seen the second again, i'm not sure he could have really done anything without clattering the two of them infront.

He bottles crosses and coming off his line on corners and when fully fit,averages giving 6 goals away a season..

Just look at the Stoke game last year down there..

He'd probably be the best goalkeeper in the world as certain sections of the SMB think he should be claiming everything. I'm surprised they haven't chirped up about his poor goalscoring record either.

If his defence does its job for the second goal (either putting more pressure on the cross or putting a challenge in against the striker) there's no need for Gordon to come and claim that.

He commanded his box perfectly well today, and I'd lay none of the blame for the goals at him.
 
well, Gordon doesn't take risks and look what happens. I said "at the very least" he should have got something on it. If it was a one off I could forgive him ..but it isn't...he has stayed rooted/got himself out of position regularly since his arrival. His brilliant reflexes (and I do mean that) get him out of a lot of trouble, but a lot of the time it's trouble he has made for himself.
Have a look at the goal again. If you are telling me there was NOTHING he could have done to stop the goal, then I guess we will just disagree on this.
But until he sorts out his dodginess on crosses, for me he will never be more than an average Premiership keeper.
 
It was atrocious defending (the 2nd). First to leave a player in acres and acres of space to put a cross in and second to allow Kevin Davies a free header in that area.

Gordon not to blame. He also made a tremendous save first half.
