England v India - 2nd Test, Trent Bridge

Nope. Traditionally at TB the pitch gets better. Green to start with, then when the grass goes it's nice and flat. Sky put some of the chases up and there's been a fair few 350+ successes with only 2 or 3 down. Need to take full advantage by ensuring we have enough runs in the bank to not lose before we think about winning - which we should be doing from here.

You're right what you say mate but how?! How after 450+ overs can a pitch get better?! Ha, I'm at a loss to understand why. Could someone in the know please explain? I'm quite intrigued!

Wouldn't declare until 500 lead personally.

As for the Bell incident, and apologies if going over old ground, but at first viewing I thought he was out because the first view of the fielding you could see that the ball hadn't crossed the boundary. Bell should have known better and his excuse after the day that he was "in a bit of a hurry" showed a bit of naivety (sp). While admirable, Dhoni shouldn't have withdrawn his appeal. Bell was out, and should have remained out.

I thought the highest chase at Trent Bridge was about 280 in tests?

Varous factors can do this. Such as drying out, flattening out. Also, the weather conditions can improve, they were very bowler friendly on day 1.

I dont think they will either, I think 400 will be enough.

But Strauss wont declare 400 ahead, no chance. It's not how he captains, he's more safety first.

Nor should he. 5 sessions should be ample to bowl a side out.

Bat until we're all out (or to mid afternoon today, failing that).

If we can't defend a lead of over 400 we deserve to lose. It should be more than enough.

Which is why IMO we should declare at around lunch. Go out this morning and go after them as aggressively as Swann/Broad did in the first innings. Get to around 450 and it means we have 5 sessions to bowl them out, which they would have to get 90 a session which they won't do.

Aye, agree with this.

I remember a few years back when a lead of anything over 250 was almost always seen as enough, now it feels like some people want a lead of 500.

Got this from here:

Test matches
Average 1st innings score at Trent Bridge is 333
Average 2nd innings score at Trent Bridge is 302
Average 3rd innings score at Trent Bridge is 275
Average 4th innings score at Trent Bridge is 149

There are going to be factors which limit 4th innings scores, but from these, it's hard to say that Trent Bridge gets better as a test progresses.

In this test, apart from day 1, when overhead conditions suited bowling more, the pitch has been a reasonable batting surface, excluding when the fielding side has a new ball.
