Was Shilton Any Good?

Pretty much the best keeper England has ever produced. He wasn't perfect and 1990 was about his limit but was f***ing exceptional in his prime.

He's f***ing bullet-proof tbh.

I dont know why the OP is getting so much shit. Shilton was f***ing woeful in Italia 90, our weakest link. No danger of him ever saving a penalty either.

The best keeper in the Tournament was Goicochea of Argentina who was their reserve, Pumpido (first choice) broke his leg in the first match so was replaced. Goicochea then went on to save 2 or 3 pens in 2 separate shoot outs, or at least save a couple of pens during patches as well as in a shoot out. Nowt ever came of him like for some reason.

called given an opionion

Whose giving the op grief like

Two things astonish me about this thread
1 That the op needs to ask the question ~ one look at wikipedia would have answered it
2 That people would take it seriously and demonstrate the Shilton was indeed fairly decent.

Think I'll start a thread about Pele ~ was he any good? Just to see how many replies I get.

Quick look at Wikipedia. He played a lot of games. Was at fault for us losing to Poland and not making the World Cup '74. Lost the League Cup in '80 after running in to his own player. Got outjumped by shortarse Maradona in '86. Was at fault in '90 for the deflected goal and failed to save any penalties despite guessing right for 4 of them showing his lack of agility. Good thinking, you're right, not that good in his later years.

Shilton was a terrific goalkeeper, but he should have been retired by 1990. His biggest fault was off the pitch. He was a hopeless gambling addict, which is why he kept playing on and off until he was 47 years old. He was still a great keeper in 1990, but some of his key physical attributes had deteriorated to the point where he was sub-par at just a couple of critical moments.

It is funny how we did not learn our lesson as exactly the same thing happened with our next great keeper, David Seaman, who we also did not realise was too old until he was lying in the back of the net...

Dave Beasant should definitely have been put in for the penalties in 1990. He was a great wind up and a very good penalty stopper.

He was 40 in Italia 90, played for England for over 15 years, won league title and European cups.

Should have been subbed for Beasant for the penalty shoot out by Bobby Robson, mind...

:) :) Tactics like that weren't thought of back then, in fact were you even allowed a keeper on the bench ??

Certainly the daftest question I've seen on here - and that's saying something

Loved Shilts coming to Roker Park - got a brilliant reception when in goal for Plymouth in 1992 think he finally forgave us for all those years of constant Tina stick.

Fantastic keeper. Not just a shot-stopper but all-round presence. Mag mate of mine still recalls the most amazing performance by him back in the day when he was beyond Superman. Bear in mind his record caps haul of 125 could have added Clem's 61 caps! - edited to add Ray Clemence shared goalkeeping duties with him between 1972 and 1984 when he got 61 caps.

Shilton had the jersey to himself after then.

Didn't one England manager (think it may have been Ron Greenwood) play them in alternate games because he couldn't decide who was the better keeper?

Fuck me shilton was unbelievable I remember watching him in the 90s for Derby at the end of his career and he fantastic he was so composing even at that age
