The Demise of the Workingmens Club

I've lived here for 20 years now, can you tell me what has changed in WMC's in that time ?
I remember back then being shocked when I saw the difference between WMC and the Australian equivalent of RSL's or Leagues clubs. The facilities on offer continue to attract a younger generation from Gym's & swimming pools to bistro's, whilst still having the subsidised drinks, acts, social clubs(golf, snooker, darts, bowls, fishing etc). They even have access to cheap holidays within Australia for members. It continues to stick to its roots of a community club but has moved with the times. I remember my mam & dad being stunned by the difference between our local leagues club and East Stanley WMC.

This is our local club to give you an idea.

I remember reading about them in Pete Brown's book and thought the same thing - they sound excellent.

The problem with most clubs seems to be "the committee". Everything has to be safe, no risks can be taken. Why spend money on modernising when the club is just fine for the group of 70 year olds in charge?

the edit has a link now.

Been a committee member for 7 year now in a failing club. Never ever fiddled anything and nor have any of the others I consider mates. A few lads do duties and get a couple of pints....24 hour drinking, supermarket selling cheap beer, brewery squeezing every last penny and holding some places to ransom. Clubs buried their heads in the sand by refusing to move with the times. We are trying to get younger faces
on but I think its to far gone. the old men that s left just outnumber us so changing things at the minute is out of the question unless we can change the way the older lads think.
think thats a big problem why younger people keep away from clubs.
You go into a bar that has 3 people in and get a seat only to get told by 84 year old Tommy that its his seat.
Or the only conversation is about the fkin miners strike that was over 30 years ago.

Looks a bit shit
Im from Stanley BTW ;)

Used to love our club, sadly shut down a few year's ago. Cheap beer, football on the telly, darts, pool and dominoe handicaps. Magic.

It used to be a rite of passage for young lads, as their dads got them their club cards. I used to play the odd game of snooker in Browney and Langley Moor klerbs. Never set foot in Brandon (or Sawmills) though, even though I'm from there anarl. I used to love the odd bottle of High Level.

I got my club card at 16 for the Cleadon Club, still got it after 41 years but rarely go in. You can only hear so many stories about the pits and yards from the Uncle Alberts

I caught the secretary at my local club fiddling the bingo. And when I say caught I mean caught, hook, line and sinker.

Put a lletter in asking for and explanation as to why he was playing bingo for free while everyone pays and I get barred for 12 months! Seriously. I had evidence and about half a dozen witnesses none of which made not a jot of difference.

The clubs dying on its arse. 9 committee on a Tuesday bingo session all taking £8 a shift that has between 60 or 70 in attendance. Absolute lunacy.
