We sang it for years... Probably before you were born, Boris and in the sol, there are still Geordies here, Geordies there, Geordies every f*cking where: we're just not so insecure that we have to sing about our fledgling, made up identity. You see, young un, we've been proud Geordies for centuries: my father, your father, his father we all stood side by side and professed our love and our Pride of being Geordies. You don't have any of that though, kidda... your history is borne of a word used to mock you and whilst you've embraced that word, the word that you're trying to exorcise hangs over you like a cloak. We're everywhere, marra: those of us who are non mackems - and try as you might to deny us and deny the fact, we outnumber your not so merry band. We are proud Geordies, Durhamites, Northumbrians, Yorkshiremen and folk from far beyond and we are all comfortably steeped in the richest of histories and are therefore not desperate to forge an identity at the cost of alienating and strong, silent majority. But you crack on with your vendetta against us, marra... it amuses us, bless you. Xx

That's a myth mate. Stupidity to suggest we are not a mackem club

Try chanting about geordies in the SSOL and see how that goes
You are probably outnumbered. Mackem is a modern derogatory term embarrassingly adopted by some who live in Sunderland. The minority of Sunderland fans really

Marra I'm probably a couple of years younger than you and honestly I'm a lot more qualified to talk about the origin of Mackems than you

Try singing about geordies in the SSOL and let me know when you get discharged from hospital

Wrong on all accounts ........but you're most welcome to support our Mackem club

Your point was succinct and on the button, marra. I too stood in the Fulwell in the 70`s along with thousands of other proud Geordies and NO proud mackems. we have no need to rewrite history, marra... We were history and so we will continue to make history.

But not by singing about being geordies

Tell me, then... Tell me your history as you see it.

Its well documented marra but only Geordies think its a derogatory term.......the rest of us take great pride in our dialect and that we are famous for macking ships of a standard and at a rate/volume that Tyneside (or anywhere else in the world) could only dream of. Sorry that it offends you that we don't care what you think

We don't need to. We have a real identity. It's all new to you

ItS not really an identity if no where else in the country recognises it though tbf.

Ask any football fan from another club and if you say you are a geordie they will immediately associate you with Newcastle Utd, and if you say you are a Mackem they will immediately associate you with Sunderland AFC.. Rightly or wrongly, thats just the way it is.

It's 'Rightly' marra

Thats another thing, Geordies are the worst in the world at insults. You lot make things  You lot eat chips with cheese on  (they dont even know the real meaning of their own insult regarding the cheesy chips ffs )

Is that all they built marra? And can you tell me when the tyne yards had a higher output than Japan??

This should be good

"Geordies! Mackems! Geordies! Mackems!" was a regular chant in the Fulwell up until the very late 80's.

You misheard........it was 'Celtic! Rangers!. Anyone shouting about Geordies in the Fulwell in the 1980s would have been slapped

Both were aired quite often. Always used to laugh at the half and half hats with "Sunderland Rangers/Celtic"

Pickies built good ships. When they joined with Sunderland shipbuilders it brought them down and finished the yards on the Wear. During the war Sunderland achievements were outstanding. However in more recent conflicts when ships were needed or in fact replacements, the Falklands, they were finished and the Tyne produced those ships. The fact is its all history now, there all sadly gone.
