LVCC - Northants v Durham

Stalled a bit with Borthwick and Mustard going quickly but Colly and Richo steadied the ship and are now pushing the rate a bit. As I type, Colly has belted Middlebrook into the stands.

9 overs left tonight - lead currently 230, would be canny to get somewhere near 280 lead tonight then have a bash first thing tomorrow. Reckon 350 in 86 overs or so would be quite sporting. Although maybe too sporting.

I am just worried because it seems to be a great batting wicket still, its a tough call early in the season!

Aye. That's the worry for us. Especially with last years Yorkshire home game in the memory. Ideally we'd want a chance at a second new ball but looking at the score now it's unlikely we'll get enough runs in that time to be able to declare.

Lead 244 with 4 overs left tonight. Think the lads are just booking in for the night now. No boundaries for a few overs now.

could of been 280 if we don't lose those 2 quick wickets

still a good day and good fightback

Colly gone. Frustrating one that. With the benefit of hindsight perhaps we should've kept the foot on the accelerator

246-5

Interesting game developing, their spinner has taken 4 out of 5 wickets here, but a lot of that is down to our lads trying to push the run rate rather than out and out good bowling. Anything more than a 320 lead and I can't see them being interested in chasing it, unless they're 100 without loss in no time.

Wouldn't it be the other way round? Get to tea with 9 or all 10 wickets intact then have a dart afterwards when you can still shut up shop. Teams chasing these targets don't usually go out all gnus blazing from the word go.

Thats an option, but a steady start would be around about 80-90 runs without loss leaving 250 plus in 32 overs, not impossible but not realistic. Northants are playing with a patched up side, at least 3 of them are playing with injuries. Two or three quick wickets puts them under pressure to save the game, and although batting had been reasonably easy when the batsmen have been patient, wickets have fallen for both teams when they've tried to up the pace.

Going off the commentary and the scores so far it seems like a good pitch still. The outfield is like lightning and runs have flowed pretty much around 4 an over in Days 2 and 3.

It's pretty difficult to call without being there. It'll be interesting to see whether Colly targets a specific score or perhaps just a specific time. Whether or not he wants to dangle the carrot for Northants by tempting them to go for the runs.

From my vast experience of First Class captaincy (on International Cricket Captain ) I'd like to see us give ourselves a go before Lunch. A tricky little 12 overs or so with the new ball. If you can pick up 1/2 then you're in the game. That scenario would give you around 78 overs which you could turn into a few more overs if you bowl the spinners for long periods during the afternoon. Obviously if you're going for runs you slow it down and bowl only the minimum.

For that idea you'd probably want no less than 330 - but on this pitch, with runs so far flowing quite well that figure may be higher.

Normally you'd back yourselves 99 out of a hundred to defend 300 on Day 4, but it'll be in the back of Colly's mind that it's still a good pitch.

You'd rather be in our position but how the lads play it from here is anyone's guess. What we want is for it to start turning, but according to the comms there's no real sign of that yet. Middlebrook's wickets were more attributed to our lads forcing the issue rather than massive turn.

Perhaps tomorrow is the day for Scotty to send a message to the England selectors. Here's hoping.

Try and get to 350 as soon as possible tomorrow, you've got to play the situation and not worry about things like the Yorkshire game last season, that was a freak result.
