Would you challenge racism/homophobia at the game?

Calling someone a ‘puff’ is usually not a homophobic slur, more likely questioning their ability to withstand a hard tackle or whatever.

I’m all for moving with the times and updating our idioms to not be offensive but what am I to call someone who is acting like a complete dunce since most epithets describing stupidity are no longer deemed pleasant? (Even though being unpleasant was kinda the point)

So instead of saying ‘shut up you moron / cretin / retard / **** / [insert alternative objectionable adjective here]’ am I supposed to say ‘shut up you person lacking the requisite intelligence to participate gainfully in this exchange of contrasting postulations’?

Similarly when a player takes a tackle and rolls around like he's been shot, do I say ‘get up you frail person as you clearly lack the necessary level of robustness required to allow you compete manfully and with full effect in this match’?

Calling somebody a poof IS a homophobic slur.

You blew it when you reached the manfull bit :lol:

Serious question.

Now that homosexuality is no longer a criminal offence and all are equal under the law why should any homosexual object to being called one if he/she is?

I can't imagine any heterosexual would take offence at being referred to as such.
I was responding to post #25.

In addition, if you just randomly throw out "gay" or "puff" as an insult when you are indicating the person in question is being soft in the head or pathetic, it is insulting to homosexuals as you are ascribing those characteristics to homosexuals in a stereotypical way.

You could of course just say "shut up" or "get up" - why the need to qualify it at all?

I’ve only ever heard racism twice at the stadium and both instances were absolutely years ago. I’ve sat all over the stadium and never heard anything. Not knocking the lads story (I know him fairly well) but I think generally our fans are sound.

I mentioned on a thread on Maja yesterday that a bloke near me is always calling him shite. I've heard the odd remark from him that could consitute borderline racism but it's generally when mentioning things to his wife. It's never quite loud enough anyway to call him out and if you did you know you'd end up in a pointless argument. This a bloke in his last 50's I'd guess. Yesterday his son was sat with him and he called him out on it - he'd made some remark about where Maja was from and that he couldn't be British - as his name was 'Erowolowowowo' or similar. His son was saying you're a racist. Fair play to the lad but like I say, it would be difficult for those around him to say something as he's not screaming it out - it's just this casual racism which is frustrating enough and I get the impression there are a reasoanble number attending who fall into this category. Quite scary really.

Two occasions

1. When i was with out lass I ignored it and kept quite. Can't risk it.

2. The other time i was with my mate and I went to town on a group of lads. ( SAFC supporters calling Kenwyn Jones a BC ) they were little scruffs in trackies. It nearly kicked off then steward chucked them out.

To me racism and homophobia is low IQ - I dont know if it can be fixed there and then, they're just not smart enough to get it.

This story doing the rounds now on Twitter, worth a read (you don't need Twitter to view it...)

Really disappointing to hear, and the lad and his Dad in question should be hoyed out and never allowed back in as far as I'm concerned. Disappointed that neither were reported to stewards by the lad posting the story nor by the surrounding fans who would have witnessed it.

So, how would you deal with this behaviour? Tell a steward? Or do you fear the potential violent repercussions from braindead aggressive bigoted scum?
I am disappointed that so many people start a sentence with the word ‘So’.

Look at this shit ffs
Did they use the ss symbol on their 1980s ‘calling cards’?

I have posted this before.

From a personal point of view I was in the North Stand when a bloke behind me started calling Bellion (playing for us) a black bastard.
I had had enough and got up, he was already on his feet, about 4 inches taller than me and had a ring through his nose.
I thought "aw bollocks", but was on my feet by then and not about to back down.

I said "You f***ing racist tossa".

He said "I might be a tosser", but I'm not a racist!"

To which I thought "Thank fuck for that", and that was the end of it.

I really believe that arguing with a racist one on one is pointless. You are not going to change his point of view. And could end up in a pointless fight.

It should be done if people are around, so they see that the racist can't get away with it and gets shouted down.
Also, people around might do something next time or back you up this time
It's unlikely that anyone other than his mates( if he has anyone with him) will intercede on his behalf.

They know that they shouldn't be saying it.
