fair enough. family moved to pakistan to escape the war, lived there 'for a few years'. cant have been the most pleasant life.

Matchday 3 (3/8) Previews

1. Afghanistan vs. Hong Kong: Afghanistan needs to win this one, otherwise they are likely out of the Super Sixes. Morale must be pretty low, considering they came into the tournament as one of the favorites but after 2 losses their chances to make it to the World Cup seem rather slim. Nevertheless, they are still favorites to beat HK, who surrendered rather meekly to Scotland in their first game

2. PNG vs. WI: Only one question: what will the margin of WI's victory be?

3. Netherlands vs. UAE: Likely to be a close affair. Dutch are better side on paper and have beat UAE both times in the recent WCL division 1 games in UAE. But the Dutch are coming off a heavy defeat to Ireland in their first game whereas the UAE had a good game with the bat against WI, reaching close to 300 chasing 350-odd after breezing past PNG in their first game. Dutch need to win this to keep their Super Sixes hopes alive. For UAE, a win likely guarantees a Super Six slot, unless the Dutch somehow upset WI in their last game

4. Scotland vs. Nepal: Scotland are favorites to win and seal a super sixes spot. They beat our boys both times in the last WCL, one by 9 wickets, the other by 2 runs. We will need to win to have any chances of making the super sixes. F the Scots, Go Nepal!

Matchday 3 Results

1. Hong Kong beat Afghanistan by 30 runs (DLS). Any remaining hopes Afghanistan had of reaching the World Cup are now dead. They will struggle to even make the Super Sixes. They will need to beat Nepal, and hope HK lose to both Nepal and Zimbabwe. Hong Kong will get to the super sixes with a victory in any one of the two games.

2. WI chased down PNG's 200 with 6 wickets to spare. PNG had a glimmer of hope after reducing WI to 50-odd for 4 but then Holder and Hope took over, Holder finishing unbeaten on 99.

3. UAE beat Netherlands by 6 wickets. UAE all but qualified for the Super Sixes

4. Scotland chased down Nepal's 149 with 4 wickets remaining. Scotland are now confirmed to make it to the Super Sixes. For Nepal, it was an all-too-familiar case of a top order batting collapse, losing 5 for 39 before the skipper and the lower order dragged them to 149. The bowlers did well to make it difficult for Scotland, but in the end it was just too little to defend. The boys will now need to beat both Hong Kong and Afghanistan to get to the super sixes.

Should be a canny tournament once the next stage starts. Hope two of WI, Ireland and the Afghans qualify.
 
Today’s roundup so far
1. Dutch beat PNG. PNG finished dead last in the group, winless in four. Dutch need to beat the Windies (with a healthy margin) in their last game to make the super sixes
2. Zimbabwe beat HK as expected, no surprises there
3. Afghanistan beat Nepal to register their first win in their fourth and final group game. Nepal still winless in 3. The final super sixes spot from group b is still in play, and will depend on result of Nepal vs. Hong Kong. If HK win, they qualify. If Nepal win, Nepal, Afghanistan and HK finish on 2 points apiece and Aghnistan go through on run rate unless Nepal win by like 200-odd runs to make up the difference
4. WI on course to beat Ireland. Irish we’re threatening at one point with Kevin O’Brien and Ed Joyce going well, but w roach double strike to dismiss both in the same over tilted the game WI’s way.
 
Scotland and Zimbabwe drew today so both go through with 7 points. Afghanistan also qualify from that group

Ireland have absolutely hammered UAE by 226 runs via D/L to go through
 
Super Sixes set up nicely with 4 teams in legitimate contention for the 2 World Cup spots. At this point it feels like WI and Ireland are favorites. WI bats are hitting form, and if they continue in this vein they overmatch everyone else. Ireland vs Zimbabwe likely the other key game to determine the second spot. Scotland have done very well so far but have a feeling they will wilt down the stretch, with UAE as their only win in the super sixes. UAE will be whipping boys. Maybe against the Scots they pull an upset but otherwise sunk. Don’t really see Afghanistan making it to the top two. Their only contribution to final standings is if they can play spoiler and upset either WI or Ireland

For 3 of the 4 the teams that didn’t make it to the super sixes, there is the small matter getting the 16th and final ODI status till 2022. The Dutch have nothing to play for, their ODI status is guaranteed because they won the previous WCL division 1 tournament. Expect a motivated HK to beat them and advance to the 7th place match. Nepal vs PNG is a toss-up. The last 2 matches between them have been close wins for PNG (2 wickets, 3 balls remaining and 3 wickets, 2 balls remaining). Heart says Nepal reverses it this time around and makes it to the 7th place match.

Winner of the 7th place match gets ODI status.

No such requirement. For example, Dutch have had ODI status for a while, and other than the odd England game, they have not played full member nations outside of ICC tournaments

What it does mean for Nepal is twofold:
1. more development money, which translates to higher contracts/ match fees for the players and more funds for the grassroots game and an ability to develop a deeper player pool
2. more exposure to higher quality teams (automatic qualification for the Asia Cup as well as the next WCL division 1 tournament, regular matches against other high-ranked associate countries, A-team tours from test nations)

Nepal have been a yo-yo team between division 1 and division 2 for a bit. ODI status would likely mean that in the long run, we become firmly established in division 1 and actually (finally) really be able to push for full membership.
 
It would be nice to see Ireland and Scotland qualify from a home perspective but I'm hoping for a WI-Zim double for the sake of the game. We need a 12-team World Cup, stupid BCCI.

Why would you prefer Zimbabwe over Ireland for ‘the sake of the game’? Afghanistan, who have underperformed terribly this tournament, recently walloped them 4-1 where the only close match was the one Zimbabwe won. Ireland, on the other hand, beats Afghanistan more often than not. How is a weaker team making it to the World Cup better for the game?
