I think the way the game is going, we should have more 20/20 world cups, every 4 years doesn't seem enough, especially with how random it can some times be

Afghanistan will beat some established nations in the 20/20 format, the longer it gets the harder it can be though, mind that Rashid is so good

First games today. Scotland currently cruising to what would be a massive win for them against Afghanistan. Ireland have the Dutch 25-2 chasing 243 from 41 overs. First televised match is WI v Ireland next Saturday.

Strangely excited that this is finally starting.

Went into a deep rabbit hole last night looking at the various grounds in Harare and Bulawayo (no clear pics of Old Hararians on Google, but Queens Sports Club Bulawayo looks class,) and finding out the stories of the teams (Nepal got in via a shock 47 run blitz from a lower order batsman over Canada when the match looked wrapped).

Hopefully we get some entertaining stuff here.

Thought I was the only sad bastard that looked at grounds on Google and whatever before a match  ;) The various players, their coaches etc. Find it all fascinating but I am a cricket tragic.

I’ve been counting down the days. But then, I grew up in Nepal so I’m probably a little more into this than most around here.

It was a rude welcome to playing a test nation vs. Zimbabwe but not unexpected. Best we can realistically hope from this is to make the super sixes. Even avoiding finishing in the bottom 2 would be an acceptable result, because this means Nepal would get ODI status till 2022

Today’s matches
Ireland vs. PNG: PNG can throw group A open with a win, but expect the Irish to win this one fairly comfortably.

WI vs. UAE: replay of warmup where WI was dismissed for a low score before rebounding with the ball. Only question likely to be is to see if the WI bats have woken up after 2 scares or if they plan to continue sleepwalking.

Scotland vs. Hong Kong: Scottish win will likely mean they have all but guaranteed themselves a place in the super 6s. In the latest edition of the WCL, Scotland beat HK by 100+ runs in one match, the other was rained out. HK finished one point behind Scotland in the final standings. Expect a Scottish win but HK coming out on top is by no means an upset. From a Nepali perspective, this is the most important match, and a HK win is ideal to keep final super six slot in play

Zimbabwe vs. Afghanistan: Afghanistan recently trounced Zimababwe 4-1 but are without their skipper. A loss for them effectively shuts them out of the World Cup since points against other teams from the group are carried into the super sixes. for Zimbabwe, this is likely one of the three matches (the other two being WI and Ireland) that determines if they make the World Cup.

Zimbabwe - Afghanistan up today. All of a sudden, a massive match.

Afghans can't afford to lose it, and Zimbos made things look easy in their opener.

Scotland beat HK and now are 2-2 and likely a lock for the super sixes. HK dismissed for 96. Scotland lost 6 to get there

WI bats woke up against UAE. Gayle and Hetmer with 100s. UAE are doing a decent job batting but they’re not gonna get to 357

Ireland look to be in good shape chasing down PNG’s 235. 50-odd required in 12 overs, 7 wickets in hand

Afghanistan looked poised to canter down Zimbabwe’s 196 but lost quick wickets between 160/3 and 170/7. This one might get interesting.

Ridiculous that some teams are having to do this.

Cricket is just stupid, wanting to keep the game smaller.

Blatter was corrupt as they come, but under him Fifa did expand the game at every opportunity and look at it now.

I agree with your underlying point but Blatter is a terrible example, he expanded the game to line his pockets even further

Final results from today

1. Scotland beat HK. HK dismissed for 96. Scotland made it harder than expected to chase, losing 6 before getting there in 24 overs. Scotland 2 wins out of 2, likely now a lock to make it to super sixes.

2. Ireland beat PNG. PNG made 235, Ireland chased it down in the 50th over with 4 wickets in hand. Ireland 2 wins out of two. PNG 2 losses out of two.

3. WI beat UAE. WI bats finally showed up, with hundreds for Gayle and Hetmer propelling them to 357. UAE made a very creditable chase, getting to 297, but in the end it was too much. For UAE, this has got to be a tremendous confidence boost despite the defeat.

4. Zimbabwe beat Afghanistan. Afghanistan at one point looked to be winning comfortably at 156/3 chasing down 198, but then lost 6 wickets in a heap to go to 177/9. The last wicket pair clawed them towards the finish, but ultimately failed as the final wicket fell in the 50th over with the score at 196. This result means that Afghanistan are likely out of the contention for a world cup spot with 2 losses in 2, both against the 2 teams in group b that are expected to make it through to the super sixes.

So what's the format? Top two in each group progress to the proper World Cup?

Top three in each group make it to an abbreviated form of the super sixes. Results against the other two teams that make it are carried over, and you only play against the 3 teams from the other group. Top 2 in the super sixes make it to the world cup

The teams that finish 4th and 5th in the group stage have playoffs to determine ranking 7-10. Associate teams that don't finish 9th and 10th either gain or retain ODI status through 2022

Making Rashid Khan captain at 19 years old looks like a bad decision by Afghanistan
