Workington on a wet afternoon

Old mining areas. I worked over there quite often in late 70’s. It was like gannin back 30 years. We have a Sunderland Supporters Club based in that area around Cleator Moor ( of WMC fame ).The proper North West who talk very much like us and I often heard men call each other ‘marra’. The people akin themselves more to NE than the Manchester area ( BBC north west ) which is a distant 2 hours + drive.
My mother's family were originally from the Workington area (Seaton) and I spent many happy holidays over there when I was growing up in the 70's. Not that different from south northumberland where I grew up and concur the phrase marra was in widespread use. i must say, they also drink like us and remember Easter being a non-stop drink fest in Seaton Legion, my uncle ws a committee man and it seemed to be one permanent lock in.

Remember huddling under what little cover the Roker End provided waiting to go and stand in the pissing rain.. it stunk of beer, tabs, bovril and cheap after shave!

Had a weekend in the new Workington Travelodge a couple months ago. Not sure why Workington has a new Travelodge like, think I was the only one in it.

Funny part of the world that's for sure.

Brian Roy came out of retirement to play for Workington. Fuck knows why.
The Dutch Brian Roy? What a bit of trivia that is

Paul Stewart also played for them at the end of his career

The end of British Steel was the end of Workington, same with Marchon at Whitehaven. Sellafield is essentially the equivalent of Nissan - it's either that or not much else
there was also goldscmidt on the way to maryport and the other big place near iggesund. all gone now and places i used to go regularly in the wagon. there's still vertellus left though.
from my experience all the folk from there i've met have been spot on.

I had friends living in Egremont about 20 years ago, and visiting them after spending so much time in the Lake District tourist areas was quite a jolt.
As people have said it felt very different to the southern lake district area, much more like the ex mining communities without much else as we have here.

But the locals were really friendly and partied like mad at weekends, they were made to feel part of the community really quickly.

As mentioned those areas really suffer from a lack of good communication like not having dual carriageways and a pretty poor rail network.

Regarding the accent etc?
I'm pretty sure there's been research done and there's a lot of historical norse words from settlers on that West Coast just as we have on the East Coast?

I always assumed the overheated property prices in the lakes would eventually spill over northwards and eventually gentrify those places?
But from what people are saying its not happened.

The whole area is just a west coast version of Durham basically. Run down places that died with mining. I bet if everyone born in the area did a family tree, 1 in 5 would find a relative from Whitehaven etc going back 120 years, because loads came over here to work the pits and setlled.
One of my great grandads was a miner from Cumberland as it was, moved to Houghton, killed in WW1.

Judging by his surname and my DNA test, his family must have originated from Scotland.

I remember Workington being in the football league, must be 50 odd years ago.

Just checked on Google it was in 1977. They were replaced by Wimbledon.

I think that was one of the geographical re-electiion votes where Northern Clubs bit the dust league-wise.

I've been there a few times and love what's left of the original ground. Overpainted rust and all.

When the old lad passed the memory will live a lot longer x

You know what Mate was thinking about exactly this regarding both my lads.

They have both seen Swindon play at over 50 different Grounds with some up to 4 times.

On one hand I think what a real shite parent I have been. On the other I think f’k it their Dad is a mentalist, got us into the heart of a football club that most fans won‘t have the opportunity to get anywhere near in a lifetime.

That picture just encapsulates what it really is about.

Just think last season as a Sunderland fan that went to Fleetwood, that night what they were thinking, then to Wembley.
Have so much respect to all Supporters who put a shift in for their respective clubs, probably more so supporting a less than fashionable club.

Reminds me of the days I’d go and watch Northern League games when they had them Monday to Friday nights.

Think the worst I ever went to was Birtley Town, did nowt but hammer it down from start to finish and their stands aren’t exactly weatherproof.
They have actual stands?

I lived in Seaton until aged 3. My grandparents lived there as well, house (Fernleigh Drive) backed onto the welfare where Seaton ARLFC still play now. That and the fact my Grandad was a big RL man got me into that particular game. Used to visit them every Saturday until I left to go to University, even stayed there for days at a time during school holidays when I was quite young. Seaton is a decent little village tbf

One of my early memories of Shoot. They had to show a Darlo game or Pools now and again.
One Sunday it was Pools 3-0 Workington. Must be 50 year ago 😕
