Probably not Cleator Moor Celtic then. They have their own little ground. I dread to think who you were playingMaybe mate aye. Played in a housing estate with parked cars for the houses litreally 10 yards away from sideline on one side of the pitch. We beat them 5-0 then had a few at there pub but went to workington on the nihht was like mordor up there, Like the hills have eyes
Fair play.
Workington is probably the biggest shithole I’ve ever had the displeasure of visiting.
Once played football at cleator moor next to whitehaven. With it been a hour and a half treck us as a team decided to make a day/night of it and stop over. We ended up at workington on the night and i can completely concur with you, Absolute shithole awful place
Now that’s a proper fan.
Cleator moor is rough as.Probably not Cleator Moor Celtic then. They have their own little ground. I dread to think who you were playing![]()

The end of British Steel was the end of Workington, same with Marchon at Whitehaven. Sellafield is essentially the equivalent of Nissan - it's either that or not much elseJust a little info from a Mackem who has lived in Egremont for nigh on 40 yrs, I was 30 when I moved for a better job and more money. Workington is an old Mining town down on it's luck with little industry to support the 25000 ish inhabitants. If you ever pop into a local pub and introduce yourselves you'll find the majority of the people in there are just ex mining folk the same as any of the pit villages around the North East.
Hoy in BarrowWhitehaven, Maryport, Cleator Moor, Egremont, Distington etc. It suffers from its location as an area definitely.
Never understood people from the north east being critical of West Cumbria - they have a lot in common. Not least the coal mining heritage and subsequent decline under the Tories.
I think it was built as part of the rugby world cup development...Workington was supposed to get a multi use new stadium to host rugby league games and speedway and the Workington Reds. It was announced and the plans looked good but then it got moth balled. I presume Travelodge and Costa were further into the project and just carried onHad a weekend in the new Workington Travelodge a couple months ago. Not sure why Workington has a new Travelodge like, think I was the only one in it.
Funny part of the world that's for sure.
Brian Roy came out of retirement to play for Workington. Fuck knows why.
Couldn't agree more. When I was still living in the UK I used to gig over in Workington, Egremont, Whitehaven, Maryport, Cleator Moor and the likes regularly and they're amongst the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. Egremont Catholic club was an absolute joy. Possibly in my top 5 favourite clubs in the entire UK and I've played them all!Just a little info from a Mackem who has lived in Egremont for nigh on 40 yrs, I was 30 when I moved for a better job and more money. The whole area is just a west coast version of Durham basically. Run down places that died with mining. I bet if everyone born in the area did a family tree, 1 in 5 would find a relative from Whitehaven etc going back 120 years, because loads came over here to work the pits and setlled.Never understood people from the north east being critical of West Cumbria - they have a lot in common. John Burridge is from their and made his league debut for them at 16. He tells a great story about his debut.Workington is a class night outAs many have said, West Cumbria has many similarities to the NE. I grew up not far from there and most people are culturally similar to us. Likewise has many of the same issues since opportunity has been taken away. Its a working class area.
Reds are a decent little club that does not have a lot of investment but keeps going despite the challenges. A few notable players came through there, Glenn Murray and Grant Holt to mention a couple who went on to play in the PL. Played against them both on many occasion back in the day, they both knuckled down and grafted to get to where they got to, while the rest of us were out on the lash at The Forum, Passions or Elliots![]()
Hoy in Barrow
"Robson, it's behind you"....Reminds me of the Notts County deluge back in the 70's
Old mining areas. I worked over there quite often in late 70’s. It was like gannin back 30 years. We have a Sunderland Supporters Club based in that area around Cleator Moor ( of WMC fame ).The proper North West who talk very much like us and I often heard men call each other ‘marra’. The people akin themselves more to NE than the Manchester area ( BBC north west ) which is a distant 2 hours + drive.Whitehaven, Maryport, Cleator Moor, Egremont, Distington etc. It suffers from its location as an area definitely.
Egremont was as far south as I got when I was working over that way but can imagine Barrow is much of the same thing.
