seems to be a trend in our place for people to upload their mug shots into outlook. Not a good sight on every email mind
Depends on your relationship with the customer and how they address you in emails, surely?

Depends how they email
If they say 'hi' to start their email, I'll do the same.
If they're formal with 'Dear', then I'll be formal.
If it's the first time I'm contacting them though (new contact or emailing on behalf of a colleague) it always starts with 'Dear' instead of 'Hi'

I don’t consider emails formal. If you want to be formal, send a letter.
Consequently, mine are full of smileys and exclamation marks if I know the client fairly well.

What industry is that in? In mine pretty much everyone opens with Hi, except foreigners and spenks.
