What is the point in Trai Hume?

Inverted full backs are just the latest fad, really, and much as I liked him, it was a mistake from Mowbray originally to do it here.

It's one thing doing it with Cancelo or Trent Alexander-Arnold. It's another doing it with Trai Hume, who is willing and committed but frankly struggles badly with his positioning even when playing in a back four, let alone when he is given different positions in and out of possession. He also offers next to nothing when he is in midfield except another body.

At a push I can understand that maybe Mowbray was thinking there was no point in having overlapping full backs because he had been given no strikers to aim for, and that we needed an extra body in midfield because he hadn't been given any strength in midfield. But it has never worked.

Hume is very limited, though no doubt destined to become a cult hero because he likes a tackle.

He's also not near the top of our list of problems. We should be getting rid of the slackers first, before we worry about players like Hume who just aren't very good.

I think Trai is a cracking fullback, but the problem seems to be that our entire back 4 is a disorganised mess at the minute. Like schoolboy defending at times. Some of the "defending" for the goals yesterday was laughable man. One of them we simply parted like the red sea ffs.

Does this now complete the full set of our players that are over rated.
I think all of our players are way better than they are showing at the moment. In part down to poor coaching, team selections, tactical approach and confidence. While I do think Hume is overrated in so much that quite a lot of our support had him down as a potential great i think at best he's just a good champo defender. Nowt wrong with that.

Not the problem,in fact probs 20 down this list of things to do.
This, also largely gets hung out to dry there's been times this season he's had zero cover from the player playing on the wing and has been chasing his arse. He always gives his all and I thank him for helping put a nail in beales coffin that public diss played a big part of getting rid of the chancery imho.

He’s a good player, with a lower Premier League ceiling (probably at centre half imo) not currently playing to his potential because our tactics are stupid and he’s demotivated.

The lads are human. The club has been a bin fire off the field since November. This will affect performance.

The way we set-up at the back yesterday was pathetic.

They need an experienced head back there, as much as I love Luke and think there's a place for him in the squad as a starting centre back I'm not so sure. He still learning the role so he might as well be another player in his twenties in reality. We miss someone like batth back there who's played there for years and knows what he's doing and what everyone else should be doing. We've basically got a back four of young lads learning and a bloke in his late twenties moving back there full time for his first full season there. Not to mention we've not got a defensive midfielder that helps shield the backline teams just walk through our midfield man.

Bought cheap and will be sold off for a handsome profit. The profit then goes towards replacing him with a player with more potential.

He's been poor these last 2 or 3 months but he's still only 22.

It's about time the fans realise we ain't as big as we think we are. The club are trying to build a foundation to build on. Unfortunately the fans want a Quinn type of transformation where it's all built on sand and money thrown around.

He does love a tackle - don't we all. But the fact he's having to make them in such a manner tells me something's already gone wrong. Let's look back at the tackles he missed against the mags for instance. Last ditch efforts 'cos he was already out of position and beaten.
Let's be honest, the Mags were (and still are) on a different level to us, even though they weren't even particularly impressive. I hate Gordon and didn't rate him, though he has come on as a player and he tore Trai a new one in that match. The game demonstrated to me just how far Trai and a few others in our squad have to go to be absolute top level players. Personally I think he can get there if he keeps learning and improving.

Least of our worries, he’s not prem quality but the rest of the team, notably not giving him some extra cover doesn’t help him. Wingers have to defend as much as defenders in the modern game, all about work rates, so when you have roberts in front of you it’s always an uphill struggle if the opposition fullback overlaps their winger.
It's Hume that often doesn't offer cover.

1st goal, 1:39...

Bad slip from Roberts, gifts them the ball, Roberts at least attempts a recovery tackle but he's beaten. Hume trotting back aimlessly. He's stood outside the 18 yard box when it goes in ffs.

2:35, the long lead up to the second. Roberts dispossessed in their half, as Blackburn double up. Hume for some reason has wandered over to the left, offering no support to Roberts. O'Nien moves to right back to deal with their move down the left. Roberts tracks back and makes the challenge on the edge of the box, giving them a free kick. Hume?? Wandered into the right centre half position.

The ball's cleared from the free kick, we're slow to push out as the ball bounces out of play. Hume assumes his right back role, and ball watches as Mundle and Roberts make an attempt to close down, O'Nien's rolled on the edge of he box, balls played across and they score a 2nd.

3rd goal. Just watch him. Fuck sake. Over committed in nee man's land and we're left with a 3 on 2 counter. He's not at fault by any stretch, but that whole goal is a structural disaster.

5th goal, wins ball, tackled, sat on his arse, token jog back towards the ball as they do us on the right hand side for the 3rd time.

Nee argument from me there, it was just an example of that stood out as he didn't get away with it. At this level the recovery tackles are sometimes enough, but you will be found out eventually.

That's clearly a massive issue like. Other than Clarke just about everyone who is still here from last season has either stagnated or massively regressed.

This is the right take for me.

He's not perfect, but is more than fine at this level. We certainly, as a team and a club, have a lot more problems than him.

Feels like he's been getting worse and worse since the whole f***ing bin fire started in December (as has everyone).

Absolutely. But it's been that way much of the season. The common denominator is Dodds & Co.

Just to be clear, it's not so much the player I'm criticising - I do like the lad - it's the role. If he's going walkabout on instruction, it needs cutting out. If he's going walkabout without instruction, it needs cutting out.

He was certainly all over the place yesterday and its hard to believe Dodds told him to push over to the left side of the pitch. But Dodds should surely be telling him to stay put. Sure he did this under Mowbray too so maybe its another Dodds coaching disaster lesson.

I disagree. I think it's very problematic and has been all season.

His performance level has dropped since he first got in the team as a regular.
He has everything to make him a top player but appears to have lost his self drive.
Perhaps bombing down the wing linking up with Amad and Roberts made it easier for him.
