We’ll sing what we want

You're not reading what I'm writing. Of course he should be respected. I never sang it in the first place, instantly seeing the problem with it.

The question I asked was should we respect any player who says please don't sing X? And is all abuse wrong (clearly by asking that I demonstrate I know this song is abusive)
I did read what you wrote. But the answer is yes if someone goes out their way to the point amed has to ask people not to say/sing something then you probably shouldn’t. Is all abuse wrong is quite an open question, technically yes it is, in reality I don’t think any player would really care less about being called crap or a wanker while they are playing or at least not to the point where they would go out the way to ask people not to

The lad wants it to stop so stop it. End of.
I think we should stop the chant as its a bit shit. However the player disliking it would hold no weight in my decision. If you gave someone a nickname at work and they twisted about it you'd most likely just call them it more

I bet people who think it's alright, will be the first to be offended by fans singing about Adam Johnson.
More likely they will have been the ones singing "He shags who he wants" at Hull the day after he was arrested.

Things that are acceptable:

Grooming minors
Racial stereotypes

Things that aren't acceptable:

5 second anti-racism gestures

We aren't his work colleagues though. We are paying money to support him whilst he represents the club.

'I know what will make him play better - singing a song he's asked us not to sing because it has racial connotations. That'll motivate him'

It's crass, ignorant and embarrassing, and anyone still singing it after the player himself has asked them not to is a moron.

I'm not sure it's 'racist', though. Racism is discrimination against a person based on race. I don't think using a harmless positive stereotype is racism. A racial stereotype is not necessarily a racist one.

It's just stupid and cringeworthy, more than anything else. The defiant response to being asked to refrain is more telling about those singing it, IMO.
It is racist. It is based in the stereotype of black men as hypersexualised savages. That one originated from slave owners as a way of dehumanising them.

The timing was pretty shite from the club mind. Most singing the song wouldn’t have even seen it.

I think you're right, but I do wonder about the consistency with which people are prepared to apply principles.

You're never going to be able to completely shut up the element of draggers doing it. Best way imo is to sing the "running down the wing" version as loud as possible and drown them out. They'll soon get bored of it if no one can hear them.

Joining the debate a bit late here..
England v Scotland in euros Last year
England fans sung about Harry Maguires big dick...is that racist or stereotyping
I for one don't think either is racist or stereotyping..just lads demonstrating juvenile behaviour fitting big dick into a song and singing it.
Lots on here offended over juvenile behaviour not racist behaviour
Just my opinion of course having witnessed songs being sung about dicks belonging to both a black and a white player.

Singing about Harry Maguire having a big dick is neither racist or stereotyping its just stupid. Sing about Amad is - it's not hard to understand.

I thought it was based on the urban myth that black men are better endowed. There's definitely a valid racist interpretation either way, we'd be best off avoiding that sort of attention before it proliferates into scrutiny on a national stage.

Same happened with Jones' song. Eventually the original became the only one.
Most of them were singing “he shags who he wants” so I doubt it

Until he was found guilty.
