VAR has ruined top level football.

But you can't say why does it work in cricket but not football. The Coventry goal being given offside yesterday was the same as someone being caught behind off an edge, and being given out off the slightest movement on ultra edge that neither players or umpires heard or saw. The difference is the level of debate and acceptance of the decision.

Correct. Football fans, in general, hoof off about marginals. Cricket fans don't.
 

VAR is shite but offside is offside. Don’t just pretend it’s not because it’s late on in a cup final.

Mind, it’s impossiblefor offside to be accurate using the frame rates they do so going to that length with tech that is t fit for purpose is pathetic.

The semi auto one is miles better.

I remember the enjoyment when I'd travelled 3 hours with my son to watch us play Citeh to have McCartney wrongly sent off after 10 mins and ruin the rest of the game, get beat and travel 3 hours home. The joy of supporting in the moment eh?!

Don’t get your point? That game was spoiled granted but it didn’t stop you celebrating Ross Stewart’s goal at Wembley whilst you thought in the back of your mine is there a VAR…. The joy of the moment.

VAR is killing the most emotional moments of supporting a club. Which I don’t think relates to your point. I would rather take the discretion of the officials over VARs discretion anytime

It used to be the case you would laugh at other supporters who got carried away celebrating a goal when the linesman’s flag was up…. Because you look like and felt like a dick.

Now with every goal that goes in you’re in danger of getting ahead of yourself.

So you don't like VAR because you're worried what people you've never met in another part of the stadium may think of you?
 
Atwell is one of the most useless referees a d consistently gets promoted above his ability. Rewarding him a euro spot on var is laughable

Offside is one of the only instances where they is no grey area, its not open to interpretation. Why people want to make something clear and absolute subjective is beyond me.

The grey area could be when the ball is actually kicked , I millisecond out either way can make a big difference
A grey area could be where the lines are drawn from , apparently the line used on Sunday actually went over the top of Wan Bissakas foot not from the tip of it, again could make all the difference.
I said to my mates ages ago that getting promoted would be fantastic for the finances but I'd rather stay in the championship where there's no VAR

The line going over Bissaka's foot is absolute rubbish based on some knackersack hoying up a heavily distorted image on Tw@tter (either on purpose or just clueless). This then misleads people and the tweet was also posted on here and even made the Daily Mail website as it spread. I've explained why that was a load of crap in these 2 posts.

Also bear in mind that some still aren't aware of the advantage, that's in it's 3rd season, given to the attacker with the thicker lines that can now overlap. It may look close but it's closer to being onside that offside than it will be in reality. Next season will be different when the semi-automated stuff comes in but I suppose it's still going to have people bringing in the 1mm/toenail debate.

I am completely the opposite of this. It’s still early stages with var and yes they are making mistakes. But give me var over linesmen missing blatant offsides and refs giving/denying pens wrongly every time. Just on that posters point about McArthy, where was it Wes Brown was sent off for a perfectly good tackle ? Stoke maybe , can’t remember . But it still pisses me off now. They need to sort out the people running var during matches , but it’s here to stay and I am glad if it.
 
when you are down to analyzing single frames in tenths of seconds, its not a clear and obvious error in my opinion

perhaps you let play go on and the manager can challenge 5 times in a game if he thinks the team has been robbed..then you can use VAR for more detailed analysis

dont they have challenges in cricket and tennis? so you trust the officials let them do their job, let linos flag and if you think they have genuinley missed something you can ask them to check it

Think maybe it should be more like the TMO in rugby. Only gets involved if the ref thinks he needs confirmation of his decision or unsighted in play.

As mentioned previously, the clear and obvious rule doesn't apply to offsides. Don't know if that's because it isn't (usually) the refs decision but the linos.
Problem we now have though is that linos only make blatantly obvious calls and rely on VAR for anything that's less than 10 yards!

Don't they now just let things go rather than flag and be wrong which could potentially cost a team a goal? Much more sensible way to do it knowing you have var to check if a goal is scored

Yes, they seem to but I don’t think that’s the way they should be working.

So, attacker receives the ball in an offside position and carries it forward but keeper comes out of his goal and intercepts but boots the ball straight to an oppo player who puts it in the net. It’s now (presumably) a separate passage of play once the keeper has cleared it so the defending team is still a goal down from an unfair offside advantage instead of having a free kick to properly clear their lines.

When does it become a separate passage of play and the previous offside doesn’t count?

If it’s blatantly offside the game should be stopped for the free kick there and then but that isn’t happening, it’s another way VAR is confusing things by allowing play to go on after an obvious offence.
 
We had it as right as it can get (barring some real reckoning with the role hierarchy of clubs plays, which is can of worms) with regard to offsides in about 2001.

Henry is probably the most difficult player to call for offside in PL history given the way he plays, how fast he was and that his team was set up to play through balls for him to run on to through the lines. I can’t think of too many goals he scored that shouldn’t have been given. The “daylight” rule was clear and concise without making everything so sterile.
