Valenciana/Catalonia

its all good - but not much on that coast between Barcelona and Valencia - Benniscassim music festival maybe - and la liga wont be on too early in August when the tomatina is. Especially with the world cup.
Both class cities, loads of good beer now in both too, as well as food. Paella the best in the world in Valencia, Catalan sausage Butifarra to be tried to in a sarnie.

And dead easy to keep away from the tourists/robbers in BCN if youre clever.
As said earlier Ramblas to Parallel is dodgy as is all the Rambla, just keep away, its mostly shit anyway.

If you go a bit further north, Girona is a great city break, especially in the old town. Calella de Palafrugell on the coast is one of several very picturesque natural bays for a relaxing break with good walks.

Otherwise, the Valencia area is to me more authentic than Barcelona. Even Alicante, if you happen to be flying into there, is an interesting town to a hang out in for a couple of days.
