Unnecessary companions in films/TV shows?

Dr Who has always had a companion and always will but does he need one, he'd probably manage on his own.

I don't know the name of Ving Rhames character in the Mission Impossible films, he doesn't do much fight scenes and the biggest job he does is cutting some wire, Benji does more, Ethan might as well have his mam on the team.
Face in the A team is another, he just looks handsome.

But crob, the companion wouldn't then get into scrapes & need rescuing by the doctor. Then the show wouldn't have much storyline & therefore not much point to it.

I tried watching an episode of that a few months ago. It seemed good at the time but she was annoying as hell. Now it just seemed crap and they are all annoying as hell.
