Turning your back on football?

MOTD and Sky Sports are absolutely perfect examples of mind numbing ennui.

Cheating footballers, never ending VAR, endless replays of goals, tackles, fouls etc. How dim do they think we are?

Jokey self-aggrandisment from the studio collection of ex-footballer drunks and clowns; the commentators, who presumably assume that we cannot read a shirt-back name and number or the time, numb our enjoyment of the game with their banale / mind numbing and frequently inaccurate comments. I just want to watch the game, even when I must listen to the kow-towing to and arse licking of the "big" teams.... And to hell with the rest.

The endless dishonesty of the Football Association and the Football League, almost always for monetary gain.

The contempt for us, the fans. At every possible opportunity. I exclude our new owners from that.
If this thread was a nail, you've just hit it bang on the head.

We don't need pundits anyway.
Because we've got,..........................................
THE ALBANIAN......HURRAH🥳🥳🥳

Over the last five, six or more years I've watched less and less football. I watch us, I watch England in tournaments, I might put the odd live game on if I'm in but I rarely actually watch any of them. I used to love watching MOTD and just can't be arsed with it and the way things have gone.

As much as I want us to be a PL club, with better players and ambitions, part of me isnt too fussed at not having to put up with VAR and contactless football games, whilst getting tonked most weeks.

These days I'd rather be out on my mountain bike somewhere, doing something with family or maybe those two things together Than sitting around watching football teams I have no affiliation too.

I don’t want to repeat what’s already been said but the comfort and service to the match attending fans is appalling.
You can’t do anything about the cold (or occasionally heat) at the match but the tiny uncomfortable seats with a lack of leg room, the mobbing of the stalls at half time instead of queues are all big put offs to me. Fans for some reason quite happily put up with this.

Do you know anyone who has just said, sod this and walked away from football.

They are sick of the way the game has gone, the money, the pretty much no chance of winning anything for your team. So much so that they just say fuck it. They don't talk about it, post about it, just live their lives as if football doesn't exist.

I haven't. I do know a couple of people who don't have any interest in football and have always been that way.

there is a few from our u23s from the last few years now listed as retired from the PFA and after looking on LinkedIn have now gone out of football into full time education.

Rarely watch anything other than Safc. Except for Durham women, and my sons team.

both honest football.

zero interest in watching stage managed millionaires trying to improve their brand in the premier league.
Premier League, Champions League and internationals are rubbish. May feel differently if we were still up there.
I much prefer the League 1 (and lower) grounds.
I wrestle with if I’d enjoy being back in the premier league.

to be honest most of the time we were their was awful, except for two years under Reid and the mag games.

the rest of it was dull and under moyes it was actually an effort to go.

I walked out the ground against Southampton in the Alladryce season. After going to 100s of away games, pre seasons to Hong Kong and Canada, season ticket for years - the game against Cheltenham the other week was my first time back.
I can honestly say walking away from football was one of the best things I ever did.
I no longer have that gutting feeling when we lose, but also no longer have that high when we win. I keep an eye on our results but that's it really now. As I choose not to go to the games I no longer consider myself a proper fan anymore.
As an outsider looking in it seems a shame that you think jacking the lads in was one of the best things you ever did.

While I respect your choice I hope that never happens to me. I think it's good to have a passion in life like SAFC, though it's not my only one. (For what it's worth I also love the great outdoors. So I get a lot out of hiking, camping, mountain biking and skiing when I'm not at the match. And I love music and gigs/concerts as well - all passions for me).

My wife supported Spurs from a child with her dad : from London went to matches etc. Then last season after another gutless away performance she just said that it. I'm not letting them ruin my weekend ever again. Good as her word , she has shown zero interest in football since and especially Spurs . Doesn't check their results, the table, didn't care that Mourinho had been sacked etc. I quite admire her consistency.

I have no interest in the Premier League for those very reasons, but I still quite enjoy all other football although I don't watch nearly as much as I used to, possibly due to the over-hyped saturation coverage.
I'm definitely turning my back on the Qatar shit show wc whenever it is.
And, presumably, the Saudi one when that comes around (it won't be long, as Qatar has paved the way with brown envelopes).

I would love it if the top 6 ? And now Newcastle fucked of into a European super league and were banned from the PL, FA cup and League Cup.
Football and proper fans could reclaim English football

i'm sure the same cycle would just repeat but with slightly less importance.

Sport as a whole is trying to eat itself

golf playing for 15 million dollar end of season prize PGA tour season ended then the next week it starts all over again

cricket turning more and more into a franchise model with IPL Big Bash And even England want a bit of the prize and created the 100

Football - “the bubble will burst” they’ve cried for nearly 30 years and yet it shows no sign of happening yet

Yet !
Football at least in this country in its current form is unsustainable imo including the championship. Unfortunately they are relying on the money generated by the ‘top’ teams and that’s why I think they allowed the Mags takeover to happen ! They need this blood money from whoever is prepared to pump it in.
I reckon in a few years time we will see ‘B’ teams from these clubs replacing those going to the wall as they will have most of the good youngsters on their books.
Money will eventually kill the game we love and grew up with

Life has changed since we were young
Back in the 80s and early 90s things were different
The weekend was about the match and where you were going out to on a Saturday night , life wasn’t expensive, these days I have to plan 3 weeks in advance if I’m going to a game , I miss the days of just turning up at the turnstiles to pay cash and get in
I miss standing, I miss the different grounds , I miss the laughs and all the old players
I’m fed up of SKY, BT , ITV , the Sh1t pundits, the cliches , the fact we have to show horn woman into a role even if they are as dull as dishwater
We are not living in a golden age of football , it’s overhyped American razz a Mataz now , if you offered me the chance to watch QPR vs Sunderland in the cup in a couple of weeks or QPR vs Sunderland from 1991 I know which game I would want to watch

On Sunday I went to the women's match at Hetton. I was impressed with the number of youngsters who were there. Unfortunately, Sunderland didn't score so the kids didn't get to hear the noise that accompanies a Sunderland goal, even though the crowd was only just short of 900. At half-time I started reminiscing about my first matches. My first, in 1962, was a derby at Newcastle, when segregation didn't take place. All I can remember is being behind the goal and hearing the ructions when both teams scored - it ended a 1-1 drawer. My first visit to Roker Park was totally different. To emerge into the Roker End and see the stadium and the crowd, especially in the Fulwell End, still without it roof, was an amazing sight. My next memory was attending a night match, when I emerged at the same place and, seeing the place under the floodlights, was absolutely magnificent. I do hope the parents of those kids at Durham, if they haven't already done so, take their kids to the SOL. Its those long memories of my first matches that keep me as emotional about the club as I did then. However, my enthusiasm may wane if we go down the FGR route and replace burgers and chicken balti pies with an unappealing nut roast.

Arguably the championship is the least sustainable with more teams than there are promotion spots living beyond their means to get to the Premier League. I fear you are right about the likely death of many clubs. Tighter regulation of allowable spending on wages might help.
