Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

He signed his first professional contract in September 2023. It still has 18 months to run.

It's quite common for the club to sort existing contracts out after the transfer window shuts as during it is their busiest time of the year.

As I said, I wouldn't know if he's been offered a new contract last year, this year or ever.
There is no way on this earth they’d let an asset get into last 18 months without a discussion.
He’s been earmarked as a major talent for a good 12-18 months now.

I’d hope he would give it a few months and see where we end up.

We are end of Jan and the season ends in May. If we were mid table and he wasn’t a local lad I’d understand. But we are right in the mix and conceivably he could be a premier league player with us his home town club whilst still an 18 year old. With all the career and financial benefits that brings.

I suppose the flip side is if Brighton have put a big money multi year contract on the table then he might be thinking that’s not guaranteed to happen in the summer.
Aye it’s ok people saying he is daft to go there but he’s probably on a couple of grand a week here and likely to get 20/25k a week on a 5 year deal at Brighton. Would you leave 5/6 million quid on the table
That will be the only thing on the mind of Ian Harte.
Why will Ian Harte be thinking about it at all?

Exactly. It’s a massive ask of an 18 year old to back their own ability. There are some players who have the confidence (perhaps even arrogance) to know they will make it.

But he has played what 7/8 professional games?

As you say for an incredibly young lad looking at a multi million pound offer on the table with no guarantee one will come back again that takes a hell of a lot to turn down.

The club may “accept” an offer but ultimately it would be down to the lad himself. The club probably say words to the effect of “we would love you to stay and sign a new contract but this offer is on the table and acceptable to us so if you want to talk to them….”

At 18, living at home, brother in the acadamy and getting first team football for his boyhood club think it would be a big ask if he went. Yea, I’m sure the money would be more but probably not significantly so as he’s unproven and wouldn’t be getting first team football.

I’ll call it that he’s still here come Monda neet.

It’s hard to not to have red and white eyes on it but when people say he won’t play in the premier league for them, well at the minute he probably won’t but he probably backs himself to do it and of course they can also send him out on loan to play. It’s not straight forward

Hopefully someone has pointed out to the lad there's 12 players already in his position at Brighton, half of whom are out on loan already.
