Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

I think the club have shown over the past few years that they'd rather keep and nurture talent. You've just got to look at the contract extensions we've done for some of our young, talented players. (We've only really sold Clarke, as an example of developing, then selling). We don't give players away or sell at the first opportunity.

I'd like to give the club the benefit of the doubt that with 18 months left on Watson's contract, that we'd offer him a favourable extension to stay. He's played about 5 first team games, so he's never going to be offered silly money at this stage and he'll be fully aware that SAFC is one of the best clubs at the minute for pathways for young talent.

If we are looking to sell, and if the £10mil bid is true (this is Nixon though) then I'd be asking why Watson doesn't want to stay as opposed to why the club are selling an asset with potential without really having the first team opportunities to show what he can do yet.

I think the club have been fantastic recently in bringing in talent, developing, staving off interest and not just selling.

So begs the question as to why this is rearing its head, unless Watson has indicated that he does, actually, want to leave, and not just see it as an opportunity to bash the club, cry 'asset stripping' or 'penny pinching' etc..

If we can get a replacement lined up just keep our powder dry and sell to the highest bidder as late in the window as possible.

He’s a good prospect but hardly proven and if he wants gone let’s make sure we call the shots this time. Gave Clarke away far too cheaply.

What’s more likely is someone has been in his ear and pressured him to push for a move. As is widely said he’s apparently a shy lad and I imagine rather naive

It has to be the wages like so that’s an issue if we can’t even compete with a mid table prem teams u21s team wage budget the games a mess … I’ve watched him a lot for the u21s and he’s miles off starting in the prem

If we sell him for a decent fee then we won't have time to reinvest it.

Then come the summer we will sell jobe and 1 or 2 others and get more decent money in and spend about half of it on players. Watson money swallowed by running costs.

Sounds great
TBF it sounds like exactly what it is, guesswork and conjecture, negative assumptions and not reality at this stage.

That’s an awful lot of guesswork mind.

He’s just a prospect to them they can afford to take the hit on if doesn’t work out. People are going way overboard with how good he is based off admittedly a decent few games for us

Well it's Premier League wages Vs Championship wages.
He's played about 5 first team games, he's not worthy of bumper wages regardless of potential. If Brighton are willing to offer Prem wages then fair enough.
Some players do need to take some responsibility, especially at his age about what football is worth to them. A clear and evidenced pathway to playing regular first team football OR sitting on a bench/U21s for a prem team on significantly higher wages

That’s the life of a championship club. Until we hit the big time again sacrifices have to be made. As I’ve said since 2017 the catastrophic damage was done by Short in his last few years back to back relegations whilst pocketing the parachute payments. Incredible how so many blamed Don and Methven when it was Short who ran the club into oblivion

It’s more from his perspective like if I was his dar I’d be saying it’s a massive risk leaving here tbh don’t get me wrong Coleman Grayson Moyes etc I’d be saying go

If it was mundle I’d get it

Yeah admittedly I probably didn’t put it in the most polite terms but have to remember he’s a lad from a massively deprived place. It’s likely families around there don’t see in a year what he could earn in a week. In the circumstances a big premier league contract could be life changing as it stands players are one injury away from being back to civilians until they bank some mega money

Don’t believe the hype, until you see the Yellow Sky Sports Stripe. The kid’s got leverage to negotiate a better contract and regular game time with us now. Can’t see him taking a Japanese international’s place anytime soon in Mitoma, which all of this bollocks seems to have stemmed from his future being up in the air. Mitoma has just came out saying he wants to stay, so make of that what you will.
