To be 'liberal'

When did this become a bad thing?
It isn't, liberal individualism is the biggest threat to the far right and fundamental extremists. People fight their causes by perpetrating an "Us" against "them" situation. The single biggest thing we all can do is promote harmony with our fellow humans irrespective of their religion or creed.
Once people buy into a liberal humanist ideology the fundamentalists days are numbered

Liberalism does not refer to one specific or uniform concept and has, as pointed out, became a pejorative or generalising term used to refer to progressives.

In reality, this masks the huge divisions and debates within liberalism. Classical liberalism and libertarianism are blatantly not the same as social liberalism, for example.

Also notable that these same people who use the term in this way erroneously conflate Liberalism with Socialism.

based on the kind of people who use it as an insult; if you care about anything or anyone other than yourself then you are a liberal. if you aren't a follower of britain first then you are a liberal. if you would give up your seat on a bus to someone who needed it regardless of their skin colour then you are a liberal.

Nailed it. You mean you aren't a knuckle-dragging prick who doesn't think we will be in the minority by next Wednesday? f***ing PC Liberal wanker.

Liberal in what sense? Economically liberal, or the misappropriated American sense which is synonymous with 'raging pinko socialist'?

And by "raging pinko socialist" the Americans mean a basic level of market/legal regulation, the very wealthy pay a bit more tax, and education and healthcare shouldn't be completely unaffordable and shit.

'Progressives' in name only. They're pretty much out of ideas hence why we're living in all but a one party state. My main irritation with these people is that they have nothing to offer other than trying to rehash the same increasingly unpopular ideas: pro-EU, pro-business agenda, open borders and free trade, wanting to keep taxes low by slashing the state and public spending, so on and so forth. Nonetheless, they'll wax lyrical about fairly noble concepts like equality, feminism and socially liberal ideas (these are things I am not against) and whatever else in almost pseudo-Marxist terms, whilst the policies they support in reality do more to perpetuate inequality than anything else. I find this endlessly irritating.

By the way, for those keeping score, I'm not right-wing, I was a member of the Fabian Society until recently when I had to rescind my membership as the nonsense in the pamphlets they would send were driving me towards anger management.

^Fuckin' hippy.^

Was that before or after every leftie started labelling everyone who disagreed with them as a racist?
but most racist people have no idea that they are racist.

e.g.
I'm not racist but I don't want any more immigrants
I'm not racist but British people should get the jobs
I'm not racist but lets build a wall to keep the Mexicans out
I'm not racist but outraged that a sign in the civic centre is in another language
I'm not racist but I don't like Muslims

YES you are racist!
