Jealous that you're watching it for the first time. It is a journey.

Enjoy season 5, it gets a bad rep but I thought it was still class especially the last episode.

My problem was that the actual bit where the police try to investigate a gangster and how the system works was a bit thrown away while it concentrated instead on a story about journalistic ethics. I agreed with what it was saying but it felt out of place with everything else on the show. I think David Simon had been involved in a situation in real life where someone had been flouting journalistic ethics despite his objections and he felt very strongly about it. But it was a bit crowbarred in there imho

The end of the show was still amazing though, where they showed you how the different people ended up across the city and how the system always wins

There were also two or three very high profile cases of US journalists making up sources and quotes in the years leading up to when season 5 was written and filmed. Stephen Glass in the late 90s and the Jayson Blair in 2003.

Both massive scandals over there at the time. Neither would even raise an eyebrow if they worked for a British tabloid, where every second quote is from a "friend of" or "source close to", the large majority of which are surely pulled out of the journalist's arse.

Remember the Jayson Blair case and remember watching the Wire and thinking this was taken straight from there.

Wish I'd never seen it before so could watch fresh all over again.

I'm deffo going to start it again this weekend. Maybe even later today
