The Pep myth

He’ll obviously be well backed financially but it’ll be some effort for him to make City as good as they were. His style - possession based - looks very old hat at the minute.

It is not the Pep myth ... it is merely the myth of the manager. Without the players, the manager, or to use modern terms - the coach - is a nobody. To take an extreme example (ok, I've just returned from the pub ) if Yogi Bear had not been injured against Millwall, if John O'Hare had returned fron Derby, we would not have signed one of the H- Bombers and we most likely, would not have won the cup. They would be no Stokoe statue adorning the SE corner of the SOL. And, of course, no Vic Halam - la la la la la.

Missed out a la.

One bad season so he spends 200m in January and wants another 5 players in the summer. Got given a unbelievable Barcelona team with Xavi Iniesta Busquets etc. Took over a munich team that had just won a treble. Got to city with a team of Aguero Yaya Toure Nasri Fernandinho Kompany Silva and De Bruyne. Hes won plenty of trophies but hes had a huge helping hand. Any half decent manager would of won plenty trophies with them teams

You forgot Messi.

Is it fuck man its dull as dishwater.

272 passes then trying to knock it in from 4 yards out zzzzz
I think it’s a bit of both really, his Barca team doing it was utter genius, some his early City teams were outstanding to watch, last couple of years not as good watching wise perhaps but were still an utter winning machine, now this year obviously losing Rodri was huge and a couple of others seem to have lost their legs at the same time and have yet to be replaced, can’t say I remember much about his Bayern team, they obviously dealt with Bundesliga in the way they nearly always do and I recall Lahms transformation to a midfielder but not much else

So whilst yeah a lot of the state of modern football has stemmed from Pep (and Spains successful team of around 15 years ago) , they had the players capable of successfully executing it, the fact that every man and his dog now tries it with clearly incapable players is more down to a lack of originality and not the fault of the people who used it well
