It's interesting seeing his current transition with positional play not being as effective due to teams mastering how to man mark it. I'd like to see how he adapts long term.

He’s outspent every manager in the last decade and has achieved 1 champions league title and has been beat to the Premier League title by Liverpool a few times aswell as being pushed by set piece Arsenal, World Club cups and minor domestic cup wins dont really count on a managers legacy I dont think.

His last two league efforts with City have been a sh!t show and ultimately theres a lot hanging over all the success at Man City over the last decade anyway !

He’s overall failed to reinvent a squad and keep a high level of success and over all of his clubs have had plenty of the best players in the world !

He’s never overachieved or indeed succeeded at a club where its unexpected or shouldnt happen !

He is ruthless . I like the way he makes a.beeline for players he wants to "tap up" after a match. Had a big hug and a word in his ear with Tonali .. after the FA Cup at SJP. Watch ths space.

Tonali is a good player but not good enough for City or Arsenal would be a decent option for Liverpool but probably doesn't score enough for them. As a reserve maybe.

Chelsea took it another level )

1992/93-2002/03 net spending
Newcastle United = £189.7m
Liverpool = £153.8m
United = £143.25m
Chelsea = £126.59m
Blackburn Rovers = £118.2m
Manchester City = £96m

And then you’ll change the argument to what then if I look into wages and prove United weren’t massively ahead on wages ?

Man Utd have spend a lot on wages mainly since the success of Fergie though as they overpaid to try and claw back success in the 90’s the wages again were only slightly higher than the clubs detailed in my last post as they were the ones at the time overpaying to try and succeed against United

Yes the meme was a bit silly, I hoped that came across

A team you watch a lot of, Sunderland, do. To avoid me listing teams and that not being enough, here's an article which gives some good examples from across Europe. These are selected examples and many others shape up with a 4-4-2 and don't get "ripped apart" as you say.

Some teams outspend the rest and never get close to winning things. Chelsea and Man United spend absolute fortunes and sometimes they're only top half teams.

I think the big takeaway is that teams nowadays set up differently in and out of possession and in different phases. We set up 442 out of possession with Diarra pushing up (Rigg last season), if they beat the initial press they both drop back to give us 6 across the middle. When people talk about 442 though they generally mean in possession with two strikers staying high and two flying wingers and I would agree very few teams play that anymore and it is difficult to do that successfully at the top level. It forces you to go long to bypass the press and play on the counter but you really need two strikers who can hold the ball up, and it can be difficult to break down defensive teams who don't press. We had success in the first leg against Coventry and scored both goals from hitting Isidor/Mayenda on the break but in the home leg they cut off the midfield with the additional man and swamped us, we couldn't get out.

To his credit, Fergie was the first British manager to see the way European teams were playing and started to play 451 in the Champions League. The 07/08 team was arguably his best team which was very much 433 in possession, 442 out of possession. He still played 442 in the Champions League final against Barcelona though and definitely did get ripped apart twice - against Pep.

The poster said "ripped apart" which only happens out of possession, so I think that is what they meant

I think the issues around 4-4-2 would be in an attacking shape, less so a defensive one
