The thing is, whilst as much as this thread is about Sammy and his football activities, he was a larger than life character around Ryhope all of the time when I was younger. There wouldn't be many people from Silky and Ryhope at the time that didn't know of him and his antics He stung me for a few pints over the years. You couldn't help but buy him a pint.
Wasn't there an article in the echo about him a canny few years back? I'm sure he was pictured in it in that light blue away top we had in the early 2000's I think. Tried to google to see if it came up anywhere but it didn't.

Yes, circa 1975.
He's still in very good shape for his age (I think he's 63) - plays 5 a side football regularly.
